    Thessaloniki Airport is the third-largest airport in Greece and to date sees on average 6 million passengers per year. The airport opened its doors in 1930, and quickly established itself as the main airport of northern Greece. Although it serves the region as a whole, the airport is only 8.1 miles from the city of Thessalonik and a gateway into central Macedonia. The airport has one main terminal, and another second terminal under construction, two runways and two taxi ways. Many low-cost and national carriers operate out of Thessaloniki Airport with national and European wide destinations.

    Before you arrive at the car hire supplier desk, make sure you have ready your rental voucher, identification, valid driving licence (including an International Driving Permit, if needed), and a credit card under the main driver’s name. This credit card will be used to hold a security deposit on. The security deposit will be released back onto your credit card once you return the car in the same condition as when it left.     The airport consists of one main terminal with an additional terminal being constructed due to high levels of demand. The current terminal is spread over three floors, with the ground floor serving arrivals, the first floor serving departures, and the second top floor hosts two restaurants and numerous bars with views across the runways. The ground floor is divided into two areas – the international non-Schengen arrivals and the domestic Schengen arrivals. The first floor has 34 check-in desks, departure lounges, a shopping area, bars and all the necessary standard airport facilities, such as, security, information desks, etc. The top floor along with containing the airport’s offices, also offers two relaxing passenger lounges.

    Airport Facilities

    The airport contains much of what you would expect from an international airport in terms of facilities. Along with everything needed for a safe and secure journey, the airport also has a luggage holding area, facilities for children, first aid areas, ATM’s on all floors should you need cash, currency exchange bureau’s, car hire desks, free internet access via Wi-Fi, charging points for mobiles, and much more. A luggage wrapping facility is available, luggage trolleys and a lost & found office.

    How to get to and from Thessaloniki Airport

    The airport is served by good road connections, so when you rent a car at Thessaloniki Airport, you’re sure to reach your destination easily and quickly. With connections to Thessaloniki city and the local region, getting around isn’t too stressful. The EO16 and A25 via the EO67 connect both Thessaloniki to Chalkidiki, whilst the Inner Ring Road at Thessaloniki provides easy access to the A1 and A2 motorways. A further two bus routes operate 24-hours per day and connect the airport to the central bus station at Thessaloniki.     Parking Tips

    Thessaloniki Airport provides 2,285 parking spaces outside its main terminal. Along with a drop-off zone, short and long-stay car parks are available. Five car parks exist opposite the terminal and offer a convenient, fast, secure and safe place to leave your vehicle. P4 is a short-stay car park; P5 caters to taxis and coaches, whilst P6, P7 and P8 are long-stay car parks. All car parks give relatively easy access to the terminal building and are monitored 24-hours per day. If you have opted for a car rental at Thessaloniki Airport, then parking your vehicle at your booked accommodation is often the best and cheapest choice. Parking in central Thessalonikican be costly. Car parks are available across the city, and we recommend the Eletherias Square car park if you want to be right downtown. If you plan to park on-street, make sure you read the road signs carefully. Make sure you obtain and validate your ticket for a maximum of an hour.
