Car Hire at Verona Train Station - Discovering Northern Italy

Verona Train Station is the main railway channel into and out of Verona, one of the largest cities in northern Italy. Known locally as Porta Nuova, it handles a succession of regular services to and from a number of nearby cities, chief amongst them Mantua, Bologna, Vicenza and Padua, all less than an hour away. Fast trains throughout the day also connect Verona with Venice and Milan (both with a journey time of around 70 minutes), along with high-speed Trenitalia trains coming in from the Italian capital, Rome, in just under three hours. Direct international routes now include Paris, Vienna, Munich, Geneva and Zurich.

First opened in 1852, Verona Station received its first train that same year on a newly-built railway line from nearby Venice. Today it handles some 25 million passengers annually, a mix of commuters and tourists who flock to Verona to experience its many attractions, such as the amazing Roman amphitheatre built in the 3rd century AD and the 11th-century San Zeno Maggiore Basilica, one of the finest Romanesque churches in Europe. Other top sights include Casa di Giulietta, the house where Shakespeare's Juliet uttered her famous words, 'O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?' from its balcony.

Verona is also an excellent base from which to explore the many attractions of northern Italy. A popular day-trip from the city with a car hire at Verona Train Station is the drive west to Sirmione, an enchanting town located on the southern shores of Lake Garda. Besides being famous for its authentic Italian cuisine, Sirmione has a wonderful 13th-century castle (Castello Scaligeri) close to the spot where the Romans used to bathe in the sulphur springs two thousand years ago. Lake Garda has many other interesting places to explore, including Riva del Garda, an old medieval town nestling idyllically between the mountains and the water's edge.
