Car hire at Zagreb Airport - Gateway to Croatia

The busiest and largest air transportation hub in Croatia, Zagreb Airport (named after Franjo Tuđman, the first President of Croatia) is located in the city's Pleso district just south of the centre. It is the main hub of the Croatian flag carrier, Croatia Airlines, and a focus city for Ryanair and Trade Air (a Croatian passenger and cargo charter airline headquartered in Zagreb). Catering for over three million passengers each year, the current airport opened in 1962 with a 2,500-metre (8,200 feet) runway and a 1,000 square-metre (11,000 square-feet) terminal. Today, Zagreb Airport has a large number of year-round connections to and from many of the most important European hubs and has continued to attract an increasing number of airlines in recent years, particularly those operating during the summer months.

Once overlooked by international visitors heading for Croatia's sun-drenched Adriatic coastline, the charming city of Zagreb has emerged as a top-value tourist destination with a host of interesting cultural attractions. Situated in the heart of the country, this vibrant European capital boasts a well-preserved medieval historic centre lined with narrow cobbled streets and an abundance of centuries-old buildings. With its twin spires, Zagreb Cathedral is one of the city's best-known landmarks and worth seeing for its treasury packed with relics from the past. Other highlights include Zagreb's excellent Archaeological Museum (home to more than 400,000 exhibits) and the award-winning Museum of Broken Relationships featuring a permanent display of love tokens collected from all around the world!

With a car hire at Zagreb Airport you'll be able to spend a few days exploring one of Europe's most stunning capital cities before embarking on a series of wonderful day trips with friends and family members. The options are endless but few visitors can resist the chance to explore the beautiful Plitvice Lakes National Park, a place that's home to bears, wolves and many rare bird species just a couple of hours' drive south of Zagreb. Another fascinating excursion is the lovely drive north of the city to Trakoscan Castle, a 14th-century fortress on Lake Trakošćan. For a taste of the Adriatic Coast and its many long sandy beaches, a good choice is a day trip to Rijeka, an enchanting Croatian port city on Kvarner Bay where lunch can be enjoyed al fresco in its many waterside restaurants.

    Terminals

Inaugurated in 2017, the main passenger terminal at Zagreb Airport is spread across three levels and is equipped with 45 check-in desks, 4 baggage carousels, 8 air bridges, 9 security checkpoints and 23 passport control booths. The ground floor is dedicated to arrivals, the first floor to passport control and departures, whilst the third floor is mostly devoted to security control. The new terminal has also been designed with expansion in mind. Enough space has been planned for the future addition of more baggage reclaim belts, security gates and other airport necessities - once passenger numbers increase.

    Airport Facilities

Modern and well designed, Zagreb Airport has a good choice of cafés, bars and restaurants in both the main Departures Hall and in the area after the security checkpoint. Duty-free shopping is also available, along with a number of shops selling all sorts of items, including newspapers, magazines, fashionwear souvenirs and travel accessories. There are several ATM machines dotted around the terminal and two bureaux de change, one in the Departures Hall and the other on the ground floor behind the Customs area. Along with free Wi-fi Internet access throughout the airport, there's also a business lounge with conference facilities attached in the International Departures section and baby-care facilities located throughout the passenger terminal.

How to get to and from Zagreb Airport

To collect your car hire at Zagreb Airport, the easiest route from the centre of Zagreb is by heading sounthwards onto Radnicka Cesta and continuing onto Domovinski Most, after which you need to keep to the left and follow the signs to the A3/E70. Turn right onto the Ul udolfa Fizira and at the next roundabout you need to take the 1st exit onto Odlasci/Departures to reach the airport. A popular option is the airport shuttle service called Pleso Prijevoz that links the airport with Zagreb Central Bus Terminal. Operating like a bus route, the excellent Zagreb Electric Tram (ZET) connects the city with the airport quickly and efficiently every half an hour or so, stopping at twenty convenient points along the way. Taxis can be found outside the main passenger terminal (Arrivals Hall) with the journey to central Zagreb taking about 25 minutes outside the rush hour.

    Parking Tips

It's always worth remembering when you rent a car at Zagreb Airport that the city centre has three paid and well signposted parking zones: Zone 1 (red) with parking limited to 2 hours operating from 7am to 9pm and Zone 2 (yellow) with a maximum limit of 3 hours (Zone 3 (blue) has no time limit). Both Zones 2 and 3 operate from 7am to 8pm, while on weekends all three zones operate from 7am to 3pm. You can pay either using the parking meter machines located on the pavements or by SMS via your mobile phone. In addition, several car parks operate 24 hours per day throughout Zagreb, such as Petrinjska, Langov trg and Tuskanac, with prices varying depending on the location (please nte that it's possible to purchase day tickets). Both short- and long-term parking is available for drivers looking to leave their car hire at Zagreb Airport for a while, with the main public car park in front of the terminal building offering more than 800 spaces.
