However, just after leaving Exeter airport a warning light appeared on the dash, a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark inside. I stopped and parked and when I started off again the warning light had disappeared. However, the car was very sluggish on the hills and I had to change down into 3rd gear on ever hill on my journey to and from Cornwall. Even some lorries were passing! I don't have an issue with traffic, however according to staff it was a regular occurance. This should be noted or warned about on collection so that additional time can be allowed. " Had a very bad experience returning the car. The agent found a very small scratch on the underside of the rear bumper and made me responsible. It may or may not have been there when I picked the car up, but it was so small and difficult to spot that most people would not have spotted it. My experience of other rental companies is that they would not make the customer responsible for a scratch like this. The agent, who was foreign, aggressively forced me to digitally sign a statement that I was responsible for the scratch. I don't know what would have happened if I had refused to sign. Anyway, a bit overcome by the unexpected experience, I just signed it. I then spoke to the Europcar desk in the terminal to ask what would happen - the agent there said I would NOT just be invoiced with a repair bill - he said that I would have a chance to challenge and dispute - in the event this advice was totally wrong, as my credit card was debited with £278 within 8 hours of returning the car, before any further discussion. Fortunately I have an Auto Europe Excess guarantee policy so I hopefully should be able to get the money back. So, given that this was my first experience with Europcar, I will not be using them again, even if they are the cheapest. "

" I think its probably typical of all car hire companies, but there was no spare tyre, or reinflation kit with the car. If there was a puncture, we would have to wait for their response team to attend to the tyre. Not at all happy with that situation! Avis did not have a map of the immediate vicinity of their car drop off point to ensure we didn't get lost on way back. "

" Upon arrival I was collected about 15 min after I called. The rep apologized for being alone as his colleague reported sick. The car on offer was a grade lower than I paid (i 10, not i 20), battered and not very clean inside, but the rep insisted its the only automatic they have at the moment. Then he told me that for 1 little scratch I will have to pay the maximum sum held on my card and offered several options for paying extra at the counter. It had never happened to me before and I was in a hurry, and he spooked me so I paid 100 Euro to cut the total by half in case of damaged. And yes, I did damage the car on my very first drive out, I grazed it on the left side and will pay the rest. But he wasn't nice at the reception. Then coming back the door was locked and out of another car comes a nice young man sent from Cardiff, with no keys, no nothing, not even a pen, and not knowing the way to the airport. I did have sat nav but luckily some other guys arrived with their hired car and we all got to the airport while I signed the copy of the damages form in the car with their pen, and he took it, leaving me with no papers of the deal at all! They could take any sum from my card now, as far as I know. All in all, I understand I made several mistakes in choosing this company, not understanding what is involved, not calling anyone when I was at the reception of the car, and then I drove very stressed, and damaged the car, which is indeed my fault. Next time I'll use a bigger provider, pay more initially but maybe get better service all around. "

" This was a very poor experience. In front of us in the queue was a customer who had not pre-booked, but who hired a car of the spec we had reserved. When it was our turn, we were firstly told we would have to wait as our hire was from 3pm not 2pm (this was not true), and were then told there was no car available of the type we had pre-booked. We were offered another car but only on condition we paid for the upgrade - which we had no choice but to do. The keddy representative then tried to sell us insurance we had also pre-booked by saying that although it looked like we were covered, we 'weren't really' The car we got was fine, but covered in scratches.
