" I booked a Peugeot 2008 type vehicle and Thrifty set about offering me less. It started with a small MG and then we were offered a C3 Aircross. It was a nice little car but it was little and we had to compromise. I pointed out that it was significantly smaller than a 2008: there was one standing 2 cars away from it BUT I was told it was an automatic and I could only have it if I paid an extra £20 per day(!). I was also told it was the same size. It clearly isn't but the internal dimensions of many cars are similar and that was what was relied on. A call from a manager was promised but not forthcoming, and we had stayed an extra day in Montpellier area, so very bitter sweet. I wouldn't use Thrifty again and I believe they are part of Hertz. Sorry about the delay in sending this off but v busy when I got back and I then wondered whether worthwhile, but I feel you have to know how we felt. "

Drove for 90 mins to my destination and could hardly get out of the car. Thereafter hardly drove it. Found out from the agent when I returned the car that there is only one polo on site, which rather makes a mockery of the "VW Polo or similar". " Unfortunately when I arrived at the airport I was told that I did not have any insurance coverage. I explained I had paid extra for it and showed the voucher, however I was told by Theo that I was not covered at all. I asked what I had paid extra for it and he just shrugged his shoulders. This was only the second time I had hired a car and previously I had bought an annual insurance but had not renewed it, I then asked Theo if I could quickly renew it as I knew I could on my phone, he told me it was too late to do that. There were a number of people behind me and I was a single woman travelling by myself. I ended up paying 250 for the insurance for the car as he made me feel I had no choice. This was more than the original rental. I feel very upset that I was taken advantage of in this way and feel scammed which obviously is not what you want to feel at Christmas visiting elderly relatives. I would appreciate it if you could give me a name and number to take my complaint further, my complaint is really with the customer service I received at the desk although I don't understand why he was unaware of the insurance I had already paid for through autoeurope. " I have been hiring cars all over the world for over 40 years for both business and pleasure. I have used many different companies for bookings and sometimes booked direct with the hire companies. I am familiar with all the ways that extra charges are made and have found Auto Europe by far the best, even sorting out problems when the actual car rental companies prove troublesome. My experience with the Auto Europe element of my rental was again first rate. Regarding the experience with Thrifty (Hertz) I have NEVER encountered the same problem that I encountered at the Hertz desk in Montpelier, France where the staff refused to even commence processing my details until the precise time on the collection Voucher was reached - there were no other customers waiting at all, they simply refused to speak to us. Whenever this has happened in the past, companies (including Hertz) have simply let me have the car slightly early. Even if there were insurance issues, they could have processed the paperwork so that we were ready for the allocated time. Instead, one of the staff went home and the other went outside for a cigarette! Very poor customer service. Thrifty or other Hertz companies will now be bottom of my choice list. "

Staff at drop-off were, by contrast, wonderfully helpful, Veronique (I think I have the name right) drove me to the car cleaning area to check for something I'd forgotten, then did everything to help when we needed our car back due to a flight cancellation, arranging a one-way extension so we could take a flight from another airport the next day. " I was surprised and irritated that when I picked up the car, I was advised that I would have to pay a €7 cleaning fee, the alternative being to bring the car back completely cleaned, or face a €14 charge on return. This was not mentioned on the voucher supplied by yourselves. I refused to pay the €7 euros, and when I returned the car, was initially advised that I would be charged the €14 for cleaning. When I said that I wished to take photos of the interior and exterior to prove that the car was brought back in a reasonably clean condition (that other hire companies would accept without any additional charges) the agent agreed not to charge for the cleaning. I think such charges should be made clear at the time of booking, as obviously it may affect which company you choose. I will avoid Interrent in the future. "

" Disappointing, on pick-up l was served by Jerome the customer advisor on the Avis desk, he advised that breakdown cover was not included in the agreement and costing me an additional 80 euros despite having taken out an additional insurance policy with Auto Europe? I was also informed that the fuel gauge was faulty and was only registring 3/4 of a tank of fuel. This turned out to be untrue as when l filled the car up the fuel gauge registered full. I subsequently returned the car with 3/4 of a tank and was was again served by Jerome who tutted at me and denied all knowledge. The car also had alloy wheel damage and scratches on both passenger side for handles. "

However, door pillars are too wide, the front passenger seat has no lumber adjustment and does not adjust down and as the rear of the car slopes down too with very wide pillars the visibility is poor to dangerous ... especially on the 30mins of narrow mountain roads to where we stayed in the foot mountains at Valmanya, Nr. Vinca. The front tyres were very low on tread which we did not notice until day 4 in the mountains!!! But, they were just legal when we gave the car back. The car had built in Sat. Nav even though when asked we were told it did not. "
" I booked an estate car (Station Wagon/Break) and confirmed that this was the case at Montpellier station with Laureen who dealt with the paperwork with me. When I got to the car pound however, the C5 they had reserved was a sedan. Not big enough to transport my partially dismantled tandem! The only available alternative was a Peugeot Partner van-style people carrier. I accepted this car, as I had to get to Caen for my ferry reservation, however this was far from ideal: my wife had to sit in a rear seat for the 10 hour journey in order to accomodate the length of the bicycle. It was far less comfortable and suitable to Autoroute travel than the large estate I had ordered. "
