    Airport Information

Originally established as a military air-base in the 1920s, Brindisi Airport received its first commercial flights from Rome in 1934. Following World War II, the country's national carrier Alitalia took over the route and added a flight to Catania. The airport is officially named after the famous Italian aviator, Antonio Papola, who died on the 13th of February 1948 in an air crash. In 2000 it became the United Nations humanitarian supply depot and is now an important distribution point for good causes all over the world. The main car rental desks can be found in the Arrivals Hall, while a few of the other local car hire suppliers are located a bit further away, with their offices accessible via a free shuttle bus service.

The airport's single terminal building is large and modern with a good number of on-site facilities and amenities. After clearing security, passengers then reach the boarding area where Gates 2 to 14 are located (Gate 1 is on the upper level). Note that Gates 2 to 9 are for Schengen flights and Gates 10, 11, 12 and 14 are for non-Schengen flights. Many of the car hire desks are located in the Arrivals Hall just after baggage-reclaim while others area a short distance away and quickly reached using the free and very regular airport shuttle bus service.

    Airport Facilities

Passengers departing from Brindisi Airport can choose from an appetising array of cafés, bars and restaurants, some with a distinctly Italian atmosphere. On-site facilities include an efficient lost and found office, modern medical centre, baby-changing facilities, a chemist, police station, free Wi-fi and several ATMs located in different parts of the airport. As there is only one terminal, it is very easy to navigate and find your way around. Passengers can also purchase bus tickets and book hotels at the tourist information office. A large Duty-free store offers a wide selection of both local and international products, along with perfumes, sweets and electrical items. There are also a few handicraft shops for passengers looking to pick up last-minute souvenirs for family and friends back home.

A bus connects the airport with central Brindisi and the bus stop is a few metres from the Arrivals Hall. Operated by local transport company STP, the service has several stops in Brindisi, including one on Via Colombo close to the railway station. Buses run every 15-30 minutes depnding on the season and the last service leaves the airport close to midnight. Bus tickets can be bought inside the terminal building (to the right of the arrivals area). Please note that the official Brindisi Airport taxis are located right outside the Arrivals Hall and are either white or yellow in colour and have the taxi sign on their roof. There is also a coach service running between Brindisi Airport and Lecce, the biggest tourist resort in the area.

    Parking Tips

It should be noted that the historic centre of Brindisi is a ZTL (low emmissions) zone where driving and parking are authorised to permit holders only. Be aware that the ZTL is located in Via Regina Margherita, Sciabich and the surrounding streets, so make sure you plan your route carefully on arrival. If you're staying in a hotel within the ZTL's perimeter, be sure to ask the reception desk to assist you with the registration of your car's number plate. It's also important to raise the issue with your car hire supplier before leaving the rental station. On-street parking is charged from Monday to Saturday but completely free of charge on Sundays. There's a large car park located near the ferry terminal, plus you'll find several more in and around the town centre. Motorists can also find plenty of parking spaces at Brindisi Airport, including short-stay parking (which is under cover) and another for long-stay parking.
