Car hire at Brussels Airport - Enjoying the Best of Belgium

With its rich mix of Walloon and Flemish culture, the historical capital of Belgium is both magisterial and blessed with a small town charm. Well organised with a modern 21st-century infrastructure, it's a city tailor-made for sightseeing with a plethora of attractions befitting of its status as one of the world's most important cities. The city centre is a concoction of cultures, religious sites, architectural buildings, historic sites, themed museums and world-famous squares, most notably Grand Place, the most monumental of them all and the spot where everything began.

For culture vultures, Brussels exudes class and character with several world-class museums and galleries located in and around the city centre. Don't miss the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts de Belqique comprising 4 first-rate museums showcasing the best of Belgian art under one single roof. At the other end of the spectrum, there's the futuristic Atomium offering breathtaking city views from the top and Mini Europe, a top attraction designed for the entire family.

And once the city sightseeing is done, there's a wide choice of day-trips available within easy reach of Brussels. Picking up a car hire at Brussels Airport provides good access to most of the country's most appealing places to visit due to the city's convenient location in the centre of Belgium. Top of the list is the ever-popular city of Brugge with its enchanting historic centre, closely followed by Ghent, a lively university city notable for its exquisite architecture. Antwerp, likewise, is well worth visiting for its lovely old medieval district and enchanting town square.

    Airport Information

Catering for some 30 million passengers each year, Brussels Airport is a modern air transportation hub conveniently situated a few miles north-east of the capital. The original airport was built during World War II and was greatly improved with a brand-new terminal building and longer runways in post-war peace time. The current airport opened in 1958 next to the existing one and a series of subsequent developments in the 60s and 70s established Brussels Airport as the one of the largest in Europe. Its innovative use of one all-purpose terminal building means that everything is located under one roof, with a good choice of bars, cafés and restaurants and a comprehensive range of support facilities available, along with around 10,000-plus parking spaces available in very close proximity to the Departures Hall. The airport is currently linked by more than 70 major airlines to over 230 different destinations worldwide.

With its innovative single-terminal design, Brussels Airport maximises the customer experience by keeping eveything close to hand under one roof, with the railway terminal located on Level −1, buses and taxis on the ground-floor and separate floors for the Arrival and Departure Halls. It is divided into two main areas: Concourse (Pier) A and Concourse (Pier) B with over 100 boarding gates in total. Brussels Airport's impressive terminal is an integrated building and movement between arrivals and departures is done through the connector building linking the ground-floor with concourses A and B.

    Airport Facilities

Brussels Airport boasts some of the best passenger facilities in the world, ranging from the most modern childcare amenities to the kind of refined gourmet dining experience you'd normally find downtown, all within the confines of a single terminal building. There are shops, bars and restaurants scattered across the public areas but most of the main facilities are tax-free and only accessible to passengers once they have passed through security. Several brands and chains have branches in both concourses and a range of onsite services cater for worship (Catholics, Jews, Muslims, Orthodox Christians and Protestants) and medium-size congresses supported by a dozen hotels in close proximity to the airport. Besides a smoking room and free Internet access throughout the entire airport, passengers can take advantage of an extensive range of benefits and conveniences, including a pharmacy, children's play area, hair-dressing salon, post office and a spacious observation deck for plane-spotting.

How to get to and from Brussels Airport

When you rent a car at Brussels Airport, you'll find that it's relatively easy to get to and from the city centre because of its close proximity to the Brussels ring road (just follow the signposts to Zaventem). From there, the main motorways to Antwerp, Brugge and other main towns and cities in Belgium can be directly accessed, meaning that transfer times between the airport and most parts of the country are never more than an hour or two. The main transport operator De Lijn runs efficient bus services to and from a variety of places all over Belgium, while MIVB/STIB provides transportation into Brussels city centre. Located under the airport building on Level −1, Brussels Airport railway station has regular trains running in and out of Brussels and onward to destinations as far and wide as Amsterdam, Paris and Frankfurt.

    Parking Tips

There are 10,000 parking spaces in the P1, P2 and P3 car parks situated right opposite the Departures Hall, which means that you'll easily be able to park your car hire at Brussels Airport without any unnecessary stress. Another 2,000 spaces are available in the P4 car park just a 10-minute walk from the terminal, which is ideal for anyone needing to park for longer periods than a few days. Parking in the centre of Brussels isn't so easy however, with very few on-street spaces seemingly available, so it's best to stick to the state-run car parks located all over the city, most notably at Centrum (Rue du Damier 26), Royale (Rue Royale 128), City 2 Rue Des Cendres 8), Alhambra (Boulevard Emile Jacqmain 14) and Dansaert (Place du Nouveau Marché aux Grains 2). Additionally, you can avoid all the hassle and cost of parking in downtown Brussels by opting for the many low-cost park and ride (P&R) car parks in the outskirts of Brussels, all with direct transport links to to the city centre by metro, tram, bus or train.
