Car hire at Corfu Airport - Discovering the Greek Islands

Named after the distinguished locally-born diplomat and the first governor of Greece, Corfu's Ioannis Kapodistrias International Airport is located just a few minutes south of Corfu Town, and a couple of hundred yards north of the village of Pontikonisi. The second largest of the Ionian Islands (after Kefalonia), it is not only one of the Mediterranean's more popular holiday destinations, it’s one of the most picturesque as well. Once the prized possession of the Byzantines, Venetians, French and the British, it's a top choice for people looking for that rare mix of friendliness, fine beaches, great food, value for money and a splendid year-round temperate climate.

Some three thousand years ago, Homer called Corfu ‘a beautiful and rich land’ and in the 21st century it remains very much the same. It's a verdant island with lush, green rolling plains alive with more than six hundred species of wild plants and shrubs, many of them indigenous. There are miles and miles of fertile olive groves and some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the whole of Greece to enjoy. And once you're weary of visiting the island's UNESCO World Heritage-listed towns and villages with your cheap car hire in Corfu, many of which are blessed with the most magnificent Venetian architecture, then it might be time to head for one of the many golden beaches for some well-deserved rest and relaxation.

    Airport Information

Corfu Airport was originally founded in 1937 and during World War II was used by both the German and Italian forces as a base for fighter planes. It was then that the runway was first extended and following the war was further lengthened to 800 metres and again to 1,260 metres in 1951 to cater for larger aircraft. Operated by TAE Greek National Airlines, the airport's inaugural commercial flight took place on the 19th of April 1949 from the Greek capital Athens, and in 1962 a passenger terminal was built which today accommodates the Corfu Aeroclub. Corfu Airport finally became international when the national carrier, Olympic Airlines, began routes from overseas which prompted the unveiling of a brand-new passenger terminal in 1972. More recently in December 2015, the airport's privatisation triggered a new phase of improvement and expansion.

With its innovative single-terminal design, Corfu Airport maximises the customer experience by keeping all the passenger amenities and facilities under one roof in the main terminal building, which is divided into separate areas for the Departures and Arrivals halls. Current passenger movements are hovering between the 4.5-5 million mark, with the vast majority attributed to seasonal traffic during the warmer months of April through October. The terminal caters for both charter flights from a selection of key European cities and scheduled flight routes operated by Olympic (the Greek national carrier) and Aegean Air throughout the whole year.

    Airport Facilities

Corfu Airport's on-site passenger facilities are extensive considering its relatively small size. Travellers can take advantage of a good range of shops, cafés, bars and restaurants as well as a large Duty-free shop selling local products. Improvement works at the airport in recent years have upgraded the airport's facilities with improved lighting and sanitary services, free Wi-Fi and better fire-safety standards. Operating for over 50 years, Everest is well-known for the quality of its coffee, trademark sandwiches and innovative pastry products, while the urban bakery brand Upper Crust is popular for its baguettes and signature flat-breads. The long list of other passenger amenities at Corfu Airport includes a first-aid centre, several ATMs and an area for recharging phones and other mobile devices.

How to get to and from Corfu Airport

With a car hire at Corfu Airport you'll quickly realise how close you are to everything, including the historic heart of Corfu Town, the island's capital. The airport is located just over a mile away from the town centre, meaning that transfers couldn't be quicker or easier both on arrival and departure. The best route into and out of Corfu Town centre is along Democracy Avenue and then via Desylla, Vlacheron and Georgaki streets, with the journey to and from the city centre only taking about 10 minutes. Besides taking a taxi (which is very quick because the taxi rank is located right outside the Arrivals Hall), there's a choice of local buses that stop at the airport bus station located just outside the airport terminal on the way to and from the city centre, also with a journey time of around 10 minutes. Suburban buses run north and south of the island and connect Corfu Town with Athens, Thessaloniki and many other popular towns and cities en route. Other local buses circulating around the island offer visitors a cheap way of reaching some of Corfu's most popular seside resorts. You can purchase a ticket on-board the bus, but it is cheaper if you buy your ticket at a shop or machine beforehand. Several long distance buses also serve the airport and it's worth noting that there are limited services on Sunday, including during the holiday season.

    Parking Tips

There is a new parking area next to the main terminal building which consists of over 7,000 square-metres of space with capacity for around 300 cars, so you won't have any problems parking your car rental at Corfu Airport. It offers both short- and long-term parking options with 24/7 security provided by cameras and staff. Free parking is provided as well as full access for people with special needs. In the centre of Corfu Town, on-street parking is available but much in demand, especially on weekdays and during the peak summer months. Please take into account the fact that some parking areas in the town centre are reserved for local Corfu Town residents and parking options in the Old Town are very limited because of the increasing amount of pedestrian-only areas and parking restrictions. To save time and money, many visitors choose to park just outside the town centre and walk into the old quarter where most of the town's top attractions can be found.
