Car hire at Ibiza Airport - Exploring the Balearic Islands

Ibiza Airpot (in Spanish, Aeropuerto de Ibiza) is a mid-sized international airport serving the Balearic Islands of Ibiza and Formentera in Spain. Located just 7 km (4.3 miles) south-west of Ibiza city centre, it caters for more than 8 million annual passenger movements, making it one of the busiest airports in the country. Ibiza island is a major European holiday destination and the airport handles both year-round domestic services and several dozen seasonal routes to and from many of the main cities across Europe.

The airport was initially built for military purposes during the Spanish Civil War but remained open after the conflict to receive both national and international tourist flights some years later. Due to the rise in holiday traffic, an intensive phase of redevelopment work commenced in the late 1950s and Ibiza Airport reopened in April 1958 with more space, improved facilities and new flight connections to several large cities, including Madrid, Barcelona, Palma and Valencia.

A short drive away from the airport, the charming Mediterranean city of Ibiza Town still preserves much evidence of its long and fascinating history. Classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, the walled Upper Town (Alta Vila) is an outstanding example of Renaissance military architecture and had a profound influence on the development of fortifications in the Spanish settlements of the New World. The city has several key attractions, most notably the Centre d'Interpretació Madina Yabisa which traces the island's Moorish history.

With a car hire from Ibiza Airport you can venture into the island's interior and explore some of the most important archaeological sites, such as the old settlement of Sa Caleta and Puig des Molins, an ancient necropolis. It's also the best way of reaching some of the island's most beautiful beaches, including Platja de Ses Salines in the south-east of Ibiza and Es Portitxol in the north. The lively resorts of Sant Antoni de Portmany and Santa Eulària des Riu are also within easy striking distance of the airport.

Established in 1954, Auto Europe has been offering the best car hire deals and the widest choice of vehicles in Ibiza and other popular holiday destinations in Europe for almost seventy years. Airport Information

Located a short drive from the capital and very well connected to the island's most popular holiday resorts, Ibiza Airport is a major air transportation hub not just for Ibiza but for the Balearic Islands as a whole. The airport has been gradually expanded over subsequent decades since the advent of tourism in the 1970s with its main runway, taxiway, apron and terminal having been greatly improved and redesigned to cope with the growing air travel market which, by the late 1990s, was already generating over 3.6 million passengers per year. Serving both Ibiza and its sister island, Formentera, it is mostly characterised by the seasonality of its demand and by its eminently touristy nature. The airport's close links with Barcelona, Madrid and Palma de Mallorca also greatly enhances the destination's potential amongst international travellers.

    Parking Tips

Ibiza Airport has a large and very well located car park within a 3-minute walk from the main terminal building. Parking a car for less than 30 minutes is free of charge, which comes in handy when picking up or dropping off passengers. In Ibiza Town, due to the high influx of tourists during the summer season, finding an available parking space can be rather challenging, yet not impossible. The good news for all those who rent a car at Ibiza Airport is that a spacious, well-supervised car park located in Es Pratet is more than ideal for short-term parking, and sometimes it is possible to find parking spaces at hotels. In and out of the city centre one can find parking garages and street parking spaces, usually functioning with a pay-by-the-hour system. Be sure not to overstay your allotted parking time as it can result in a hefty fine or with your car being towed away. Parking spaces marked by blue and green dotted lines signify that paying is obligatory. There are usually blue ticket machines nearby for obtaining a parking ticket that needs to be visibly displayed on your car's dashboard.
