Car hire at Kalamata Airport - Visiting Southern Greece

Modern and efficient, Kalamata Airport is the busiest and largest air transportation hub in the country's popular Peloponnese region. It serves both domestic and international routes in and out of southern Greece. With a car transfer time of around 10-15 minutes, the airport is located just 9 kilometres (5 miles) from the centre of Kalamata, the biggest town in the area.

Inaugurated in 1959, the airport received a major upgrade in 1991 in line with the increase in European holiday traffic frequenting the region. By European standards, it is a fairly small airport and mostly handles charter and low-cost flights during the summer months, along with regular domestic services to Athens, Thessaloniki and Heraklion operated by Aegean Airlines and Sky Express.

Kalamata itself excels as a tourist destinations on account of its idyllically indented shoreline, wonderful sandy beaches, forested mountainscapes and verdant valleys. The city also boasts a significant nuber of archaeological monuments to explore, most notably Ancient Messene which dates right back to the Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age. But most summer visitors are more interested in Kalamata's white, sandy, picture-book beaches that embroider the city's long coastline.

There so much to see and do in this part of southern Greece by means of a car hire from Kalamata Airport. The nearby Costa Navarino golf resort is an 18-hole course of international renown and offers visitors the added delight of fine gourmet dining. Some of the local towns worth exploring in the Kalamata area include Pylos and Methoni, while the nearby beaches of Voidokilia and Gialova rank amongst the best in the whole of Greece.
