Terminals

The airport has a single terminal which first opened in 1973 and has been extensively refurbished and improved in recent years. The main departures area has forty check-in desks, sixteen boarding gates and seven baggage belts. There are no air-bridges, so passengers are sometimes asked to walk the short distance to or from the terminal building or are transported the short distance by shuttle bus.

Madeira Airport offers its passengers a comprehensive range of on-site services and facilities, including information desks, travel agencies, car rental desks (in the Arrivals Hall), ATM machines, bureaux de change, free Wi-Fi, cafés, restaurants and several shops selling clothing, accessories, newspapers, books, perfumes, wine, etc. Several internationally-known brands such as Burger King, Pizza Hut and Starbucks are located in the main catering area, along with a good range of local Madeiran companies. The large Duty-free store is a favourite among passengers using Madeira Airport, mainly because of the range of Portuguese delicacies on offer. There are two lounges and a special fasting-track service with a priority channel for passengers to move through the airport more quickly when necessary. The airport also caters for passengers of reduced mobility with dedicated services and specially-adapted toilets and lifts inside the terminal. There's a 24- hour luggage-storage service on the ground-floor for bulky items nd numerous lockers available for smaller items. Other facilities include an on-site medical centre with qualified nurses, a post office and baby-changing facilities.

How to get to and from Madeira Airport

With a car hire at Madeira Airport you'll be just a few kilometres from the island's capital, Funchal. Shuttle buses are available from the many of the main seaside resorts and hotels when you need to get to the airport, plus there's plenty of on-site parking available. The Aero-bus is a frequent express bus service that operates between Madeira Airport and the centre of Funchal, while the airport's taxi rank located right outside the Arrivals Hall has a regular supply of cabs available at any time of the day (just look for the yellow cars with blue stripes and the 'Taxi' sign lit up on top).

Parking Tips

When you rent a car at Madeira Airport, the chances are you might want to visit Funchal and therefore will need to find somewhere to park. Many of the larger hotels offer free parking to guests (check this when you make the booking) and there are several large car parks in and around the centre of town in close proximity to many of Funchal's main tourist attractions, such as Parking Plaza CR7 (Av. Sá Carneiro 3) and Park Estacionamento Almirante Reis (R. José da Silva Saca), bot of which offer safe, reasonably-priced parking 24/7. There's another spacious car park on Luís de Camões Avenue to the west of the city centre where you can park your vehicle at any time of day, making your visit to Funchal even more comfortable. Madeira Airport, likewise, has five big car parks that are open 24 hours a day, all year round, offering low-cost to premium parking options both indoor and outdoor.
