Car hire at Nantes Airport - Visiting Western France

Nantes Airport (officially known as Nantes Atlantique Airport) is an international airport serving Nantes and other popular destinations in western France. Located just 8 kilometres (5 miles) south-west of the city, in the Bouguenais region, it caters for over seven million passenger movements each year and is currently the third-largest airport in western France (after Toulouse and Bordeaux).

The airport grew from a single military airfield built in 1928 on a portion of its current site. In 1939, its first paved runway was constructed with a length of 900 metres (2,953 feet) and during World War II the airfield was briefly used as a British RAF facility before being captured by German forces. In 1951, Nantes Airport received its first commercial flights which triggered the building of a new terminal and major extensions to the runway.

Nantes is a very popular destination with dozens of top attractions and plenty of tourist interest in the city's surrounding areas. Modern and state-of-the-art, Aéroport Nantes Atlantique is now a major gateway for people looking to explore the Loire River wine region, and with a car hire from Nantes Airport they can arrive, pick up their vehicle and be on their way in just a few minutes.

In the city itself, you won't want to miss the Quartier Bouffay (the historic centre) where many museums and delightful old buildings exist. Neither will you want to leave Nantes without taking a leisurely stroll through the naroow cobblestone streets of Île Feydeau, once an island in the Loire River where the great shipping tycoons built their sumptuous mansions in the 18th century, many of which still exist.

Auto Europe has over 65 years of experience providing quality car hire in Nantes and other destinations in western France at the cheapest prices. Terminals

Nantes Airport consists of a single passenger terminal for both domestic and international flights, which is divided into four halls. From left to right are Halls 1, 2 and 3, while a connector from Hall 3 leads southwards to Hall 4. The ground-floor level also includes a baggage-claim area and several check-in desks. All the departures check-in desks, passenger lounges and gates are situated on the first-floor of the terminal building. Hall 1 comprises an Arrivals area, including an airport information counter, café, food-hall and bar. In Hall 2 you'll find a café, gift shop, newsagent, numerous arline counters and direct access to the main boarding area. Hall 3 has a first-aid post, baby-changing facilities, café, food-hall, bar and access to many of the boarding gates. Hall 4 contains a baggage-wrapping service, arrivals area and access to more departure gates. Outside the terminal building (oppsite Hall 2) is the airport's main taxi rank, car rental offices and bus stops for many of the key routes into the city.

    Airport Facilities

There are self-service banking and bureaux de change facilities in Halls 2 and 3 and a staffed currency exchange kiosk in Hall 3. For food, passengers can choose from the excellent brasserie restaurant, a bakery serving snacks and hot cakes etc. and several bars and cafés in the main part of the terminal. There are several shops, including a large Duty-free store and a bookshop/newsagent. Passengers with reduced mobility can take advantage of specially-adapted lifts, ramps and dedicated toilets throughout the building. Other services include a first-aid point, baby-changing facilities and a photo booth. Several meeting rooms are also available for companies looking to host seminars and other corporate events on the airport premises.

How to get to and from Nantes Airport

It couldn't be easier to drop off your car hire at Nantes Airport. From the centre of Nantes, take the westbound D723 to the city's E3 ring-road and stay on it until you reach the Grand-Lieu exit (51). There you'll join the D85 main road which leads straight through to the airport's main entrance. The TAN Air Shuttle bus service links downtown Nantes with the airport throughout the day and most of the night, plus bus number 37 stops right outside Hall 1 of the terminal building and connets with tram line 3 in the city centre. The airport's main taxi rank is located on the esplanade opposite Hall 1 and journey times take about 15 minutes outside the morning and evening rush-hours.

    Parking Tips

Despite the lack of on-street parking spaces in the heart of the city centre, Nantes has plenty of large, well-managed car parks located in close proximity to the main inner-city tourist attractions. Visitors choosing to rent a car at Nantes Airport will find many centrally-located car parks, including Effia Médiathèque (18 Rue de l'Héronnière), Parking Graslin (Rue Jean de la Fontaine), Effia A.Briand (Place Aristide Briand), Parking Commerce (1 Allée de la Bourse), Parking Bretagne (Rue Mercoeur), Talensac (Rue du Bourgneuf/Rue le Notre), Parking Decré-Bouffay (18 rue Moulin), Parking Cathédrale (7 Rue Sully), Effia Gare Nord (Boulevard Stalingrad), Effia Cité Int. des Congrès (Avenue Carnot) and Effia Gare Sud (Quai Malakoff). A cheaper option is to use the many P&R (Park and Ride) car parks situated on the edge of downtown where you can park cheaply and use the city's efficient public transport system to reach your destination in a few minutes.
