Newcastle Airport is a great gateway to the north of England, allowing you to explore not only Newcastle upon Tyne, but also other towns in the region, and even Scotland.
Newcastle is a great city that makes history and shapes the future, a city that never stands still. With a rich history that dates back to the Roman Empire, you can still visit a lot of ruins and historical sites that will make you feel like you are walking alongside history itself. A city full of life and energy, be sure not to miss a noisy football match and enjoy the vibrant nightlife.
The airport was opened in 1935 and consisted of a grass runway, a clubhouse, hanger, workshops and a garage. The runway was lined with empty oil drums filled with oil rags and lit as an aircraft approached, to be used as runway signalisation. It was used as an auxiliary wartime base for the RAF during WWII. In 1966 the construction of a new terminal was completed as well as a new runway and a new air traffic control tower. In 1978 the airport was designated a Category B, which meant it became a regional international airport. In 1980 it was extended and improved check-ins, lounges, catering and duty-free facilities. In 1991 the Airport Metro station was built, connecting the airport to the city and beyond, and in 2003 it was renamed Newcastle International.
