Located on the outskirts of Olbia, a charming city on Sardinia's idyllic north-east coast, Olbia Airport (also known as Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport) is served by doezns of domestic, international, regular and low-cost airlines from all over Europe. Catering for around 3 million passenger movements each year, it offers direct flights to many cities in Europe, many of which have widespread worldwide connections, as well as many seasonal charter companies.

Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport is one of three international airports in Sardinia, along with Cagliari Elmas Airport in the south and Alghero Airport on the island's north-west coast. It is the main gateway to the beautiful Sassari region, an area full of ancient history and bulging with tourist appeal. Olbia Airport also provides good access to the Emerald Coast where many fine sandy beaches exist.

A very old port city, Olbia is a thriving tourist destination with many interesting attractions, including one of the best archaeological museums (the centrally-located the Museo Archeologico) in the whole of Italy. Its historic centre boasts many striking churches, namely the famous Romanesque-style basilica of San Simplicio built in the 11th century and St Paul's Church which is notable for its dome made with mosaic tiles of various colours.

Besides the many quaint little fishing villages to be found in the area, there are several prehistoric caves and natural grottos to discover in the nearby Gulf of Orosei as well as Alghero, one of the most picturesque medieval seaside towns in southern Europe.

    Airport Information

First opened as a military airfield in 1921, Olbia Airport is a busy and fast-growing air transportation hub in one of Sardinia's most sought-after tourist regions. Completed in 1974, the current airport we see today is the main gateway for the international passengers visiting the island, especially during the peak summer months of July and August. In the last few years particularly, traffic through the airport has shown impressive growth with at least half the number of travellers arriving from outside Italy, with the airport currently serving more than 30 airlines and 65 destinations in 20 different countries.

    Terminals

After three years' extensive work, Olbia Airport's new terminal covers 42,000 square-metres and has capacity for 4.5 million passengers per year. Representing a total investment of around €8 million, it was designed by Willem Brouwer Architects and incorporates the airport's original terminal building, which was redeveloped into a 3,000 square-metre retail area. The terminal has 40 check-in desks and ten boarding gates, five of which are equipped with jet bridges. It contains a wide variety of shops and restaurants, a lively wine bar, small art gallery and an indoor garden area featuring local flora. Comprising two levels, the ground-floor is divided into the Arrivals/Departures and check-in area with an information counter, airline ticket offices, lost/found department, luggage-storage section, club lounge, ATMs and several food and beverage outlets. Outside the ground-floor passengers will find the aiport's automated car parks, the Car Rental Terminal (signposted as the Terminal Autonoleggi), and the bus and taxi stops. The first-floor is reserved for the business centre's meeting rooms, the airport's on-site university, a chapel and museum.

    Airport Facilities

The passenger facilities at Olbia Airport are extensive enough to cater for the high volume of summer traffic. Besides free Wi-fi, travellers can expect to find plenty of ATMS and bureux de change, as well as baby-changing areas, a tourist information booth, left-luggage office, mobile device charging points and a first-aid office open 24/7. Clothing, perfumery, bookshops, underwear, handicrafts, typical Sardinian products, leather goods and luggage are just a few examples of the many retail outlets available at Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport. Along with a popular music bar, a number of bars, cafes, pizzerias, self-service restaurants and a wine bar are available for travellers looking to relax and enjoy something to eat and drink before catching their flight. Passengers can also refresh themselves in the After Beach Showers section before or after their journey.

    Parking Tips

Long and short stay parking facilities are provided in front of the passenger terminal in a large car park, so you shouldn't have a problem parking in the city once you have picked up your car rental at Olbia Airport. Parking tickets are collected at the entrance gate and the pay is at the end of the stay. On-street parking is available in Olbia but you need to pay attention to parking signs to avoid a fine, so make sure you buy a ticket from the nearby parking meters. There is a charge for parking in Olbia town centre, but it is reasonable compared to many other Italian cities. Public car parks are generally open from 9am to 1pm and again from 4pm to 8pm except on Sundays and public holidays. Parking tickets are available from the automatic machines and from newsagents and tobacconists. Parking spaces where you have to pay are marked by a blue line, disabled parking by a yellow line and free parking by a white line. During the tourist season, you will have to pay to park near many of the island's beaches, including the ones in the Olbia area. You can buy a ticket directly from the car park attendant. Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport parking spaces are located right in front of the terminal, about 20 metres from the terminal entrance. Open 24 hours a day, the main terminal car park offers more than a thousand spaces to passengers using Olbia Airport.
