Car Hire at Salzburg Central Train Station - Visiting Northern Austria

Salzburg Central Train Station is the city's main railway facility and a stop for ICE and IC long-distance trains, as well as local trains operated by Deutsche Bahn (DB AG) and the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). Offering numerous international connections extending well beyond central Europe, it is located within easy walking distance of many of Salzburg's most famous sights, including Mirabell Palace and Mozart's house.

First opened in the 19th century, it underwent major remodelling works from 2009 to 2014 and today functions as a busy and very efficient one-shop travel stop for commuters and tourists alike, who flock to the station to take advantage of of exhaustive range of on-site amenities. Travellers passing through Salzburg Central Train Station (known locally as Salzburg Hauptbahnhof) have access to a manned tourist information centre, police station, several bars, cafés and restaurants along with a wide range of shops.

Salzburg needs no introduction, it's one of Europe's most popular destinations, largely on account of its musical heritage and strong ties with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the city's most famous son. The house where he was born in 1756 is a must for music fans, particularly the museum displaying numerous interesting mementos of his life and career. Other key city attractions include the castle (Festung Hohensalzburg) built in 1077 and the Benedictine Abbey of St Peter (Erzabtei St. Peter) founded by St Rupert in 690 AD.

The scenery in this part of Austria is truly spectacular and there is no better way to enjoy it than with a car hire from Salzburg Central Train Station. The city makes a wonderful base for day trips, plus it's a great place from which to explore other Austrian cities and some of the most scenic parts of neighbouring southern Germany. Just an hour's drive south-east of Salzburg lies Hallstätter See, Austria's most scenic lake featuring the picyure-perfect lake-side town of Hallstatt.

    Parking tips

Due to the geography of the city and the steadily growing amount of traffic, Salzburg has a limited amount of parking spaces available, with all the parking areas in downtown Salzburg designated short-term parking zones. When you rent a car at Salzburg Central Train Station, perhaps the best thing to do is leave your car at a Park & Ride (P+R) car park then use the public transport network to travel into and out of the city centre at greatly reduced rates. There are currently four Park & Ride car parks in the centre of Salzburg offering around 4,000 parking spaces all year round. There are dozens of conveniently-located overground and undergound car parks in the centre, including Rot-Kreuz-Parkplatz, Rot-Kreuz-Parkplatz, Rot-Kreuz-Parkplatz, Barmherzige Brüder, Altstadtgaragen and Bahnhofsgarage, the latter of which is situated adjacent to Salzburg Cntral Train Station.
