With a car hire from Tenerife South Airport you can start exploring the beautiful ‘island of eternal spring’ not long after stepping off the plane, leaving you even more time to discover its many wonderful attractions. The island has several UNESCO World Heritage Sites to explore, such as La Laguna, Teide National Park and the Macizo de Anaga. It is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve due to its large number of endemic species and is home to one of the world’s largest outdoor festivals, the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival.

Of all the islands in the Canaries, Tenerife is the largest, the most populated and the most visited with approximately 5 million visitors each year. One of the main reasons for its popularity is the excellent weather conditions that exist all year round, hence its nickname - the ‘island of eternal spring’.

How to get to and from Tenerife South Airport

Opting to rent a car at Tenerife South Airport is the best option for those wishing to discover the island in its entirety. The road network is well connected and the roads are good, making it possible for you to reach tourist hotspots like Santa Cruz de Tenerife before going off the beaten track. The capital city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife can be reached in about 40 minutes by driving north via the TF-1. Other popular tourist areas in the southern part of the island, like the beaches around Costa Ajede and Los Christianos, can be easily reached by heading west on the TF-1 for about 15 minutes. Should you need more information regarding driving in Spain, please read our informative guide.

In case you are not picking up your car hire from Tenerife Airport but from a downtown location instead, there are buses that can take you to the main cities on the island, depending on where you're headed. Local buses leave regularly from outside the Arrivals Hall, with tickets sold on the bus and the service usually operating between 8am and 10pm every day. There are five important lines from the airport that will take you across the island if needed. Line 40 goes as far as Costa Adeje and Los Cristianos. Line 111 can take you to Santa Cruz in one and a half hours and Line 711 passes Santa Cruz and the beaches of Los Cristianos and Costa Adeje. Line 343 will get you non-stop to Tenerife North Airport, Puerto de la Cruz and Los Cristianos., while Line 415 connects the airport with El Fraile and San Isidro.

Taxis can be found at the rank located right outside the Arrivals Hall on the main level and are available 24/7. All taxi cabs in Tenerife are metered, so make sure that your taxi has a licence to operate from the airport. To avoid a scam, we advise you to look for the letters SP in the back of the car, this stands for Servicio Público in Spanish – Public Service in English.

    Parking Tips

At Tenerife South Airport, there are around 800 parking spaces available for cars and 81 spaces for buses. P1 is located a few steps from the terminal building and the first half an hour is free of charge, but after that you must pay at the automatic payment machines in the Arrivals Hall. When returning your car rental at Tenerife South Airport, there is a designated car park located close to the terminal where all hired vehicles are picked up and dropped off.

In towns and cities, it can be difficult to find street parking in peak hours and during the peak summer season on the island due to the influx of tourists. We advise you to look for parking in backstreets or in car parks. Some hotels also offer their guests a complementary parking space. Travelling during non-peak hours is also advised as the roads will be less congested.
