Car hire at Split Airport - Gateway to Dalmatia

With over 2,800 hours of yearly sunshine, it's no wonder that Croatia's second city, Split, is gaining a fast-growing reputation as one of Europe's most popular holiday hotspots. It's much larger than the other seaside towns embroidering the country's idyllic Adriatic coastline, such as Rovinj, Pula, Zadar and Sibenik, which means there's a lot more of tourist interest in the way of museums, art galleries and other cultural attractions.

Besides its temperate year-round climate, Split also boasts one of the most appealing and scenic locations in the whole of the Mediterranean. Situated on a spectacular peninsula between the Split Channel and the eastern part of the Gulf of Kaštela, the city is protected by the low-lying mountains of Kozjak (2,556 feet) and Mosor (4,393 feet) which provide plenty of added appeal for visitors who enjoy popular outdoor pursuits like hiking, bird-watching, mountain-biking, etc.

With a car hire from Split Airport you can experience the Adriatic as it has always traditionally been - a long stretch of stunning coastline with more than 1,200 offshore islands of various sizes and descriptions. An area of immense natural beauty, the whole region is dotted with UNESCO World Heritage Sites and historic places, most notably Split and the ancient walled city of Dubrovnik.

Conveniently located just outside the city, Split Airport is the main gateway to the Dalmatian Coast and other key parts of central Croatia. With annual passenger movements approaching 3.5 million, it is the second-largest airport in the country with regular flights to all the top domestic and European destinations right throughout the year, along with increased frequencies during the hot summer months.

For almost seventy years, Auto Europe has been a strong leader of the international car rental industry. We offer the highest quality of service at over 24,000 locations in 180 destinations worldwide, including all the most popular towns and cities in Croatia. Airport Information

After the capital Zagreb, Split Airport is the most important air transportation hub in Croatia. It first opened for air traffic on the 25th of November 1966 and has since served as a major catalyst for the growth of the central Croatian tourist region. Improved with a brand-new terminal in recent years, the airport is the main gateway to the Dalmatian Coast and other key destinations along Croatia's enchanting Adriatic shoreline. The airport operates scheduled services to many key major European cities, along with an extensive range of summer charter flights. Located about 20 minutes from the city by car, in very close proximity to the town of Kaštela, it has a wide range of on-site facilities and amenties, including free Wi-fi Internet for passengers whether they are arriving or departing. Airport buses run from the terminal to the centre of Split day and night, seven days a week and local buses run from just outside the airport terminal with bus stops accessible by walking through the main car park adjacent to the Arrivials Hall.

Where to pick up my car hire at Split Airport

The desks of the most prestigious car rental companies are located in the airport's Arrivals Hall. When picking up your car rental at Split Airport, it's important for the main driver to have all the necessary documents about their person, including a valid driving licence, DVLA code and an international credit card in the main driver's name. Please don't forget to inspect your vehicle for any existing damage before leaving the car hire pick-up point. When dropping it off, always remember that it needs to be returned in accordance with the chosen fuel policy (ie full-to-full, etc). The main car hire park is located opposite the terminal building just a few minutes' walk away.

    Terminals

Split Airport's single terminal building was reopened in 2019 with new facilities and an extensive range of extra amenities for passengers. After a period of construction and expansion, it now has 34,500 square-metres of additional space, bringing the total to 46,000 square-metres to enable the airport to cater for up to 2,500 passengers per hour instead of the previous 2,000 (now totalling up to 40,000 travellers a day). The terminal currently has 32 manned check-in desks and 10 automatic check-in desks, as well as a fully automated luggage sorting area. More good news for passengers using Split Airport is the fact that the improvements also included the opening of a newly-built bus terminal with parking spaces for up to 50 buses and an additional 900 parking spaces for cars.

    Airport Facilities

The main terminal building at Split International Airport is ultra-modern and equipped with a wide range of on-site passenger services and facilities. There's a money exchange centre on the ground-floor with ATMs, along with an efficient lost-luggage department in the Arrivals Hall. On the first-floor you'll find all the amenities you need before boarding your flight, including several cafés, restaurants and a well-stocked mini-market selling a good selection of Croatian gifts, souvenirs, perfume, sweets, watches, sunglasses, toys, jewellery and leather goods. There's also a VIP lounge on the first-floor, a post office on the ground-floor and a dedicated car rental section in the Arrivals Hall where you can rent a car at Split Airport and be on your way in a few minutes. Free Internet access is available to all passengers, whether they are arriving or departing. Passengers of limited mobility are well catered for with a number of specially-adapted toilets and support facilities.

How to get to and from Split Airport

Split Airport is very well connected by the city's local public transport services, by sea as well as on land. Bus routes 37 and 38 serve the airport every 20 minutes throughout the day and the journey time is about 40 minutes. Furthermore, an efficient shuttle bus service operated by the local transport company Plesoprijevoz between the airport and downtown Split connects with most incoming and outgoing flights. Taxis are available right outside the terminal building's Arrivals Hall exit and offer passengers a 30-minute transfer into town. The airport is also linked to the Split suburban railway system via the Promet bus line which runs eight times a day between the nearest train station (Kaštel Stari) and the airport, with plans in the pipeline for a direct railway connection sometime in the future. In high season only, there's no better way of arriving in the city than by water and Split Express runs a high-speed ferry service from the port, which is a short 500-metre walk from the Split Airport terminal building.

    Parking Tips

At the same time the new terminal was opened, a new car park with 900 parking spaces was inaugurated opposite the Arrivals Hall building and accessed via a pedestrian bridge. If this car park happens to be full, a good alternative is CroParking which is open 24/7 and has space for up to 100 vehicles, with a free shuttle to and from the airport terminal building. When parking your car hire at Split Airport, please bear in mind that the historic centre (where many of the city's top tourist attractions exist) is mostly pedestrianised with limited access for vehicles other than local public transport. Nevertheless, there's a good selection of car parks available just off the city centre, such as at the eastern end of Riva, on Vukovarska Street (just outside the city walls) and across from Strossmayer Park where more than 320 parking spaces exist. Not far from Vukovarska, you'll find two other car parks on Svaciceva and Zrinsko-Frankopanska, while a cheaper option is located a bit further away on Plinarska Street.
