Driving Information in Finland

Driving Licence Requirements

In order to drive a hire car in Finland you must be at least 18 years old and have a full driving licence valid in your country of residence.

Age Restrictions

To hire a car and drive in Finland, you must be at least 20 years old (age may vary by car category) and have held your license for 1 year. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge when picking up a car rental in Tampere and other destinations.

Road Rules and Petrol Stations

General Finland driving information, laws, rules and regulations:

Driving in Finland is done on the right-hand side of the road.
Seat belts are mandatory when driving a hire car in Finland.
The use of a mobile phone while driving is prohibited, with the exception of a hands-free system.
Drivers are to carry a valid driver's licence, registration documents and insurance documents at all times while driving.
Petrol stations in Finland open from 7.00am to 9.00pm with some stations in major cities open 24 hours.

Tolls

There are no toll highways in Finland, making your journey in Helsinki an easy one!

Parking Information

Most cities have metered parking areas. When there are no metres, pay-and-display Finland parking vouchers - which can be obtained at gas stations - must be displayed on the dashboard.

One-Way Car Hire

Domestic one-way car hires are unrestricted and free of charge. There are fees for international one-way rentals, and not all vehicles are allowed. If you plan to drive a Finland car hire you can pick it up in one location and return it to a different one, but there are some restrictions that you need to check with your car hire supplier.
