    Portugal all year round (part one)

    Besides being one of the most popular tourism destinations for British citizens, Portugal also offers bargain holidays. Here you can also find some of the lowest car hire rates. But let us not forget about essentials. In addition to affordable prices, there is much more that lures people to this country. Everyone can find something for themselves: a leisure holiday at the beach, visiting historical sites, or learning the culture and trying the local food. All year round there are interesting cultural, music or sport events in which to take part. Have a look at the list below, which includes various events taking place in Portugal this year.


    International Chocolate Festival Obidos - 22 February - 17 March
    You can take part in workshops, buy chocolate specialties at food stands, see chocolate sculptures or watch the best international chocolatier contest. The festival will take place at the foot of the hill in which Óbidos Castle stands. This medieval castle is one of the seven wonders of Portugal.


    Holy Week in Braga - 28-31 March
    Easter is celebrated in Braga in a special way. Every year, thousands of tourists flock to Braga to take part in a procession, with people dressed as biblical characters and a life-size Jesus statue being carried through the city streets. The holy week is the last week of Lent, which is the week before Easter.


    WRC Vodafone Rally de Portugal Lisbon - 11-14 April
    Motorsport and car racing fans will gather in Lisbon this April to watch the WRC Vodafone Rally de Portugal, round 4 of the WRC FIA World Rally Championship. The best rally drivers will compete in Lisbon, and in the Baixo Alentejo and Algarve regions.


    Festa da Flor/Flower Festival Funchal, Madeira - 9-15 May
    Spring at full blossom in Funchal. The city streets will literally be flooded with flowers, as traditional flower carpets are prepared for the festival. The celebrations last one week, during which you can visit the flower market, see the flower sculptures, watch the floral parade and enjoy life performances by local folk bands.


    Lisbon will celebrate the Festas de Lisboa in June. In short: open space music performances, exhibitions, various workshops and theatre plays. The night from June 12th to June 13th is called Noite de Santos, and it marks the feast of Santo António - the patron saint of Lisbon. The streets are decorated with garlands and lights, music and street parties spread all over the city.Porto

    Festa de Sao Joao - 23 June
    You can get hit by a plastic hammer that night! This tradition is supposed to bring luck. People celebrate at rusgas - street dance parties with live music - eat grilled sardines and drink the local wine.


    Optimus Alive! Passeio Martimo de Alges, Lisbon - 12-14 July
    Open air music festival with Green Day, Depesche Mode, Kings of Leon, and Alt-J. The festival takes place on the prommenade by the Tagus river in Lisbon
