Car Hire at Alicante Train Station - Visiting the Costa Blanca

Alicante Train Station (known locally as Alacant Terminal or Esacion de Ferrocaril) is located to the north-west of the centre, just a short walk from Plaza de Luceros (one of the city's main squares). Catering for a constant flow of commuters and tourists alike, it is the main transportation hub of Alicante and its outskirts, with regular connections to some of Spain's largest cities. The country's high-speed rail network (called AVE, which stands for Alta Velocidad Española) was extended to Alicante in 2013, so the fastest train services to Madrid, for instance, now take less than two and a half hours.

Serving about three million passengers per year, it is the city's main railway station and one of the busiest in the whole of the Costa Blanca tourist region. There are good regional rail links (with some routes operated by Cercanías local trains) from Alicante to the nearby towns of Xàtiva, Murcia, Lorca, Cartagena and the lovely seaside resort of Águilas, which means that visitors on holiday in those areas can easily get to the city to collect their car hire from Alicante Train Station before exploring the area.

Overlooked by an imposing medieval castle, Alicante is a bustling seaside destination further boosted by a laid-back Mediterranean atmosphere and culture. There's a lot to see and do in and around the city centre, such as the excellent MARQ archaeological museum and the the 14th-century Basilica de Santa María, one of the oldest churches in the region. Alicante is also famous for the many vibrant tapas bars inside the city's hsitoric quarter that serve up some of the tastiest delicacies in the Costa Blanca.

With a cheap car rental at Alicante Train Station you'll be within easy reach of some of the best beaches in south-east Spain, such as Playa de San Juan (just 10 kilometres north-east of the city centre) and Playa del Bol Nou located further up the coast towards Benidorm. Heading south takes you to Murcia (an ancient city famous for its 14th-century cathedral) and Cartagena, an old port town that was first inhabited by the Carthaginians around 220 BC. A 2-hour drive north of Alicante lies Valencia, a thriving cultural city with many fine museums and attractions.

One of the world's leading car hire companies, Auto Europe currently has over 24,000 convenient pick-up and drop-off locations in more than 180 destinations. Station Information

Alicante Train Station's long history began on the 4th of January 1858 when the first train arrived from Madrid. Passenger services subsequently began on the 1st of March 1858 after which the official opening was graced by the arrival of Queen Isabella II on the 25th of May 1858. It remains a busy railway terminal to this day with regular services arriving from many different parts of the country, incuding Barcelona further up the Mediterranean coast. Spanish railway operator Renfe runs a number of trains per day from Madrid and Barcelona (the high-speed journey from Madrid takes around 2.5 hours and up to 5 hours from Barcelona). Commuter trains also connect Alicante with a number of interesting places such as Murcia, while suburban services (known locally as cercanías) can get you from Alicante to Elche in less than half an hour.

    Station facilities

As one of southern Europe's oldest and best-established railway terminals, Alicante Train Station has a good quota of on-site passenger amenities, as well as the many facilities to be found close by in the town centre. On the station premises there's a multi-lingual information desk for tourists, along with several cafés, bars and restaurants selling drinks, snacks and hot meals throughout the day. There are plenty of machines to buy short and long-distance train tickets and a manned Renfe office where travellers can buy tickets or sort out any issues they might have. Besides luggage lockers, numerous ATMs and bureaux de change are on hand for visitors looking to pick up some local currency (the euro) and souvenir shops where they can buy last-minute presents for friends and family back home.

How to get to and from Alicante Train Station

Conveniently located in the heart of town, visitors rarely have any problems picking up their car rental at Alicante Train Station. The city is easy to navigate either by car or public transport, with several local bus and tram routes stopping right outside the entrance. Being so close to the city centre, it's just as quick to get there on foot if you are staying in and around the Old Town. Many of Alicante's main points of tourist interest are a relatively short walk away, such as El Postiguet Beach (30 minutes), the El Barrio night-life area (20 minutes) and the Avenida de Maisonnave shopping district (just 5 minutes). The station also has a well-served taxi rank very close to the main exit. The C6 bus service runs between Alicante Airport and the town centre right through the year, stopping outside the station and at other strategic locations around the centre of Alicante.

    Parking tips

Many people who rent a car at Alicante Train Station decide to look for a suitable parking space before visiting the city's most important tourist attractions. On-street parking is limited, especially during the morning and evening rush-hours, but the good news is that the main port area has two large car parks which normally have a few spaces available at any time of the day or week. Another good option is the Saba car park next to Alicante Train Station where your vehicle will beneift from 24-hour surveillance. The official long-stay car park at Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport (just three minutes from the main terminal building) is the ideal option for people visiting the city. Please note that parking along a yellow curb is not permitted, while parking along a blue curb means it is paid parking and there should be a ticket machine nearby.
