Car Hire at Barcelona Sants Train Station – A Gateway to Catalonia

One of Spain's most popular cities, Barcelona is an absolute must for anyone wishing to combine the pleasures of a beach holiday with the delights of a foodie's paradise. Whether you want to go for a swim, laze under the sun or enjoy a nice walk on the promenaded by the waterfront, you can have your pick of some truly stunning options. From popular Barceloneta to family-friendly Sant Sebastía, from the fashionable Somorrostro to the pristine Mar Bella, Barcelona's beaches are some of the most sought-after in the Mediterranean.

And if you'd like to try some amazing Catalan and Spanish food during your stay, the real difficulty will be to choose from among the hundreds of first-class bodegas and tapas bars scattered throughout the city, to say nothing of Barcelona's wonderful food markets. La Boqueria, perhaps the most famous of them, is located along the popular La Rambla and well worth a visit. The colourful Mercat de Santa Caterina and the newly reopened Mercat de Sant Antoni should also be on any foodie's must-visit list.

While great beaches, amazing food and enviable weather are undeniably part of Barcelona's allure, that's not where the city's appeal stops. It also boasts enough cultural attractions to satisfy even the most discerning architecture buff or art lover.

Gaudí, perhaps Barcelona's most well-known son (though he was technically born in Reus), left its mark on the city. Seven of the city's nine World Heritage Sites were designed by him: Park Guell, Palau Guell, Casa Mila, Casa Vicens, Casa Battlo, the Crypt of the Church at the Colonia Guell and, perhaps the most recognisable building in Barcelona, the unfinished Sagrada Familia.

But Barcelona's architectural wonders don't stop with Gaudí. Montaner (Salieri to Gaudí's Mozart) has two World Heritage Sites to his name, the beautiful Palau de La Musica Catalana and the impressive Hospital de La Santa Creu I de Sant Pau. Besides a sightseeing tour of the works of these architectural giants, any trip to the city must also include a stroll along La Rambla and a tour of the Gothic Quarter.

And why stop there? By picking up a car hire at Barcelona Sants Train Station, you have everything you need to explore Catalonia at your leisure or even to set off on a road trip across Spain! Go on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela or drive down to Madrid. Andorra is under three hours away by car, and the drive to Alicante takes only around five hours and a half. With your own wheels, your itinerary is entirely your own and you can tailor it to your exact specifications to get the most out of your Spanish holiday.

    Station Facilities

A large and modern station, Sants boasts a number of shops, including a Barcelona FC shop, a Swatch and a Natura. For anyone feeling peckish, there are several restaurants and cafés throughout the stations, and if you'd like to pick up a newspaper, a map or a paperback to keep you company on your journey, there are also newsagents and a bookshop.

Should you need some travel tips or should you have any questions, you can always head to the Tourism Information desk, which is located behind the long-distance travel ticket booths (Venta Antecipada Larga Distancia), in the centre of the station.

If you need a place to leave your luggage, you can do so in the station's lockers, which can be found on the left-hand side of the building. Simply follow the "Consigna" sign. In order to get into the area where the luggage lockers are located, all bags are required to go through the X-Ray machine. That's also the case to access platforms 1 through 6 (the platforms for long-distance and high-speed trains).

The car rental desks for companies located directly at the station are at the back of the station, next to McDonald's.

How to get to and from Barcelona Sants Railway Station

Barcelona Sants is located to the west of the city centre, some 10 minutes from Las Ramblas by car. Depending on traffic, the drive from the station to L'Eixample takes around the same.

If you're flying into El Prat Airport but picking up your car rental at Barcelona Sants Train Station, you can easily reach the station by train. Simply hop on a Renfe train at the airport and you'll be at Estació de Sants in 20 minutes.

    Parking Tips

The car park at Barcelona Sants Station has four levels and is open 24/7. Payment can be made on the machines located at the entrance. Drivers have the possibility of paying in cash (euros) or by credit card.

If you pick up your car hire at Barcelona Sants Train Station, a concern may be where to park the car elsewhere in the city. You'll be happy to know that most of the metered areas of the city are free during the weekend (though be sure to always double-check). Free parking during the week can usually be found in the car parks of some shopping centres, such as Ikea or La Maquinista.

In regard to metered street parking, there are two parking zones in Barcelona: green and blue.

Green zones are meant for locals. Drivers without the appropriate permit can still park in those areas, but will pay significantly more than residents and the parking time is capped at 2 hours.

Blue zones can be used by anyone. Depending on the area, the time limit for parking in these areas varies between 1 and 4 hours. As is the case for the green zones (and as mentioned above), parking in metered areas tends to be free on the weekend. However, make sure you always read the information on the parking meters, as there are some blue zones (particularly in the city centre or near the beach), where parking is paid even on weekends and public holidays.
