Car Hire at Bergerac Train Station - Discovering the Dordogne

Bergerac Train Station sits at the centre of the town of the same name in the heart of the Dordogne, one of the most picturesque regions of south-west France. The station (known locally as Gare de Bergerac) is located on the Libourne-Le Buisson railway line and is served by TER (Transport Express Régional) services operated by the French railway management company SNCF. The station first opened on the 20th of December 1875 and was built by the Compagnie du chemin de fer de Paris à Orléans.

This busy railway hub is can be reached direct from a number of major French cities, most notably Bordeaux, Paris, Lyon and Toulouse. But once you reach Bergerac, the best way of getting around is definitely by car and although the local train line runs the length of the Dordogne, it does not stop at each town and the services can be quite infrequent, especially during the low season.

Sitting majestically on the banks of the Dordogne River, Bergerac is the largest town in the local area and is the ideal base from which to explore the many nearby attractions, including the famous vineyards. Its historic centre still retains a quaint old feel with its narrow cobbled streets lined by small family-run boutiques selling home-made crafts and produce. The town's central focus is the Place Pélissière, the perfect place to stop for a coffee, shop for souvenirs and admire the centuries-old timber buildings surrounding this delightful main square.

With a cheap car rental from Bergerac Train Station you can have the best of both worlds by enjoying the town in its entirety before heading out into the lush, green Dordogne countryside to visit some of the castles and vineyards located a short drive from the centre of town. Don't miss the prehistoric cave paintings at Lascaux Cave in the Vallée de la Vézère, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, nor the wine city of Bordeaux, a bustling port city with a long sandy coastline and dozens of world-class tourist attractions.
