    Station Information

Cagliari Train Station was opened in 1879 for passengers. In 1893 it was extended to the Port of Cagliari for freight. It is the terminus for the Cagliari line to Olbia, Ozieri and Oristano. During the 1980s, another platform was added to increase its line capacity to eight rail lines. This new rail route lined Cagliari to Decimomannu. The train station has one main building, with services located across three floors. It is located right in the heart of Cagliari next to its port. At present no lines in Sardinia are electrified so trains currently run-on petrol – this can be quite noisy and pollutant. The station links to all of Sardinia’s towns, except Alghero and Nuoro.

Where to pick up my car hire at Cagliari Train Station

Despite being the region’s main train station, there are few car hire desks located here – however those of note include Avis and Hertz. When you rent a car at Cagliari Train Station, you’ll find the car supplier desks easily by following the relevant signage. Avis is in the train station itself, whilst Hertz is located on the square. Before you arrive at the rental desk, make sure you have all your paperwork ready.

This includes your rental voucher, suitable identification, your driving licence, including an International Driving Permit if required, and a valid credit card. The credit card must be under the main driver’s name and contain enough funds for a deposit to be held on it. This deposit will be released once you return, and it is confirmed that the car is in the same condition as when it left. It is therefore important during your pick-up that you inspect the vehicle for any damage and note it on the pick-up slip. When you return get a member of staff to check the vehicle and sign it off as okay. If possible, always take photographic or video evidence. It is also important to note that some suppliers will require more than one credit card, information of which can be found on your voucher’s terms and conditions.

    Parking tips

There is an open-air car park right outside Cagliari Train Station, which is operated by MetroPark. The rate is 1 euro per hour and is within walking distance from both the train station and city centre. Spaces are plentiful so finding parking at the train station isn’t difficult. A bonus is that if you decide to pick-up your car rental at Cagliari Train Station, then the car hire supplier will have their own designated parking bays. There are other parking options located near the train station, such as E25 parking and on-street parking.

Parking in Cagliari itself is only free on Sundays and during weekdays from 1pm to 4pm. Free parking is very limited and virtually impossible in the city centre. Free parking is available at Eleonora D’Arborea if you are lucky enough to find any. If you decide to pay for parking, then the on-street parking rate is up to 1 euro per hour. We would highly recommend parking in a car park garage, rates are 5 euros per day, so very economical and with many garages conveniently located.
