Car Hire at Catania Centrale Train Station – Uncover Eastern Sicily

Situated just north of Catania ferry port is the city’s iconic train station – Catania Centrale Train Station. With one terminal, the station has been beautifully designed and constructed in a traditional Sicilian style dating back to 1867. A major transport hub for Catania and the surrounding region, a car hire at Catania Centrale Train Station is often the best starting point to explore the city. The train station provides rail links to Palermo and Syracusa, stopping at numerous stations along the way. From Catania Centrale you will also find a link to the actual port of Catania, but this has unfortunately been suspended since 2016. The ferry port provides regular links to mainland Italy, Malta and Salerno.

With over 65 years of global car hire industry experience, Auto Europe can provide standard car rental at a rate to suit all budgets. Station Information

Catania Centrale Train Station was opened in 1867 and has since acted as the terminus to Catania. The station is spread over two floors with basic amenities and facilities. It is one of the most important stations in Sicily, with links to the city ferry port and other important centrale stations. Due to its beautiful architecture, it is protected under the national cultural heritage authority. The train station is electrified and is serviced by the city’s only metro line. The station has four platforms and seven tracks. Along with a regional service, you can also catch an intercity service from Catania to Genoa, Florence, Naples, Pisa and more. This is achieved by loading the whole train onto a ferry when it reaches Messina.

Where to pick up my car hire at Catania Centrale Train Station

Although there are no rental suppliers located at Catania Centrale Train Station, locally you will find Avis and Europcar, to name but two. The car hire suppliers are spread out from each other, so we recommend using your GPS device to track down the address. Europcar and Hertz are located north of the train station, whilst Avis is towards Catania ferry terminal. The lack of rental suppliers at the actual train station shouldn’t however put you off from opting to rent a car at Catania Centrale Train Station. For one, the actual supplier offices are on average a mere 10-minutes’ walk from the terminal.

Make sure you have your rental voucher, identification, a driving licence (International Driving Permit, if required), and a valid credit card, before arriving at the car rental desk. A security deposit will be held on the credit card, the amount of which will be stated on your rental voucher. You must have enough funds on your credit card for this deposit to go through. The deposit will be released back onto the same card once the car is returned. The vehicle must be in the same condition as when it left, due to this, we advise inspecting the car during pick-up, taking photographs and capturing video evidence of anything concerning. Upon your return, please get a member of staff to reinspect the vehicle and sign it off as okay. Some rentals may require more than one credit card and the said credit card must be under the main driver’s name.

    Parking tips

There is a car park located just outside the station terminal, with additional parking spots along the station facade. It is important to note that some of these parking bays are reserved for taxis, so make sure you read the parking signs before leaving your car. Car rental suppliers have their own parking bays, therefore finding parking for a car rental at Catania Centrale Train Station won’t be an issue. Parking is paid for, and is in operation between 08h30 until 13h30, and 15h00 until 20h00 daily. The current fee is 0.87 cents per hour. There are around 50 car parking bays available.

If you do not mind walking a little bit, there is plenty of free on-street parking around the train station and in the port area. In central Catania parking is more limited but it is not hard to find. There are official city car parks provided across the city, at key locations such as Via Luigi Sturzo, Piazza Paolo Borsellino, Via Plebiscito 747 and more. It is recommended to avoid on-street parking due to the high number of break-ins, instead opting for secure car parks. Central parking spots are indicated by a blue line. Paid parking spots will have a pay machine nearby. Avoid individuals who are trying to sell you parking tickets directly.
