The airport in Faro handles millions of passengers every year. However, due to the tourism boom in the Algarve, the authorities are looking into ways of optimising the building for a larger number of travellers. Renovation and expansion works often take place at the airport as a result of these attempts. Faro Airport consists of one terminal building divided into two areas - one for arrivals and one for departures. With two floors, and four modules with gates, the airport is compact in size and easy to navigate.
The airport has all the facilities a common traveller would need, and they include eating and shopping options, newspaper kiosks, ATMs, and a post office. Most of the dining options at Faro Airport are located in the middle of the terminal building after you pass customs. The airport mostly offers visitors cafes and fast food options, but also has a pub. Some cafes are also dotted airside. Coffee shops and restaurants are mostly open from early in the morning until late in the evening.
After passing Airport Security, you will have an even better choice of bars and restaurants at your disposal to pass the time before your flight.
Shops are mostly found after you pass through security control, and include kiosks and travel accessory shops, as well as shops selling luxury and artisan goods. Faro Airport also offers travellers unlimited access to free Wi-Fi.
Driving your car hire from Faro Airport to central Faro is very simple, as the drive only takes ten minutes via the N125-10 road. Other destinations on the Algarve coast are also easy to reach: you can get to Albufeira in around 40 minutes by heading west on the A22 motorway. Further east on the A22, you will reach Lagos in about an hour. It is important to note that the A22 motorway now has tolls. We recommend asking the local car rental company how to best pay for the toll, if necessary. Although far in the South, Faro is only two and a half hours' drive from Lisbon, which makes for a great weekend road trip.
There are many buses that can take you from Faro Airport to the city, such as lines 14 and 16. Most run between 5am and 11pm and are operated by Proximo. Taxis also make trips between the airport and Faro. The bus stops and taxi ranks are located facing each other directly outside the terminal building.

If you wish to park on the street, you will, in almost all cases, be required to pay for parking using a meter. Be sure to carefully read all signs near the space that you have found. For example, if a parking sign says "Residentes", these spaces are reserved for residents. Parking in a car park is also worth considering. There are both paid and free car parks available in Faro. An underground car park is located at Avenida 5 de Outubro, near the centre. A free car park can be found close to Largo de São Francisco.
