    Station Information

    Hamburg Hauptbahnhof Train Station was opened in 1906 to bring together four previous stations under one roof. With six main line platforms, providing regional and long-distance rail services, the station is regarded as the busiest in Germany, welcoming in just under 600,000 annual passengers. As a major transport hub both for the city and the country – it is well integrated with the local transport network, including the U-Bahn and S-Bahn networks. The train station itself is centrally located in the city - in the Hamburg-Mitte borough which makes for easy access to the city centre. The northern side of the train station is primarily composed of shopping – known as the Wandelhalle Shopping Centre. Along with regional services, you can also catch InterCity and EuroCity connections across Europe, with Hamburg Hauptbahnhof Train Station being an interchange for passengers travelling to and from Scandinavia.

    Station facilities

    As a major transport hub, all the standard facilities you would expect for travellers is provided. From ticket offices, to information desks, toilets, lost & found office and ATM machines, you’ll find everything you need for a pleasant journey. In addition, towards the northern side of the train station you’ll come across the Wandelhalle Shopping Centre. This was built in 1991 and is seamlessly attached to the train station. An ideal place for shopping, here you’ll also find kiosks, a pharmacy, service centres, a flower shop and numerous bars, coffee houses and restaurants. The upper floor of the centre also incorporates a gallery.

    How to get to and from Hamburg Hauptbahnhof Train Station

    Being so centrally located in Hamburg, means that getting to and from the station, especially if you have a car hire at Hamburg Hauptbahnhof Train Station, is very simple, with numerous options available. One can either catch a bus, which stops outside the train station, or arrive by taxi, with the taxi rank being located just outside the station building. The U-Bahn and S-Bahn services will also bring you to the station with minimum effort. The underground U-Bahn will take you right across the city and is known as Hauptbahnhof Süd – hosting metro lines U1and U3. Whilst the S-Bahn overhead trains will take you throughout the region, and can be boarded at Platforms 1, 2, 3 and 4. These provide services to Barmbek, Harburg, Bergedorf, Altona, Wedel and Eidelstedt.

    Parking tips

    Near the train station there are numerous car parking options available. Drivers can either decide to find some on-street parking – which is however, very difficult to come by. If you do happen to find a parking spot, make sure you pay the required fee at the metre. Near the train station, there are two car parking garages – one is 300 metres and is known as P1, whilst the other is 350 metres away and is known as P2. Parking your car rental at Hamburg Hauptbahnhof Train Station shouldn’t be too difficult, with car rental suppliers having their own dedicated bays. The P1 car park has a total of 427 parking spaces and is open from 4am until 10pm – although exiting can be done at any time. P2 car park is smaller with only 16 parking spaces, it is however opened 24hrs, 7 days per week. Both car parks employ special discount offers for rail travellers.
