Where to pick up my car hire at Lisbon Airport

If you decide to collect your car hire at Lisbon Airport, then you will find all the car hire supplier desks located right of the exit gate within Terminal One. Simply follow the car rental signage to the required desk. All desks are next to each other in a smaller building linking the main terminal to the car rental garage. When you return your car hire, you will have to return it to the same car park. As the car park is located next to one of the busiest roads in Lisbon, make sure you feel comfortable with your car and read our Portugal driving guide to be familiar with local traffic regulations.

Before arriving, please make sure that you have fully read your vouchers terms and conditions, paying particular attention to the deposit amount, fuel policy, supplier name and any additional documents you may need. In general, you will be required to provide a valid driving licence, the rental voucher and a credit card with your name on it. In addition, you must have the funds on your credit card to cover any deposit needed.

Before you leave the garage with your car, make sure you fully inspect the vehicle, noting on the pick-up form any damage you may find. If convenient we also recommend you photograph or video any damage or issues. Report anything you find to the car supplier assistant before driving away.

    Terminals

Two terminals exist at Lisbon Airport. Terminal One has been in operation since 1942 and is the main airport terminal. This terminal handles both arrivals and departures. Many of the national carriers depart from Terminal One, such as TAP Air Portugal, British Airways and so forth. As the main terminal, it has easy access to the parking garages and local public transport system.

Terminal Two is a smaller terminal located a short shuttle bus ride away from Terminal One. This terminal was created as a temporary measure to handle the increased passenger numbers until a new airport is built. Terminal Two only handles departures and as such has no direct link to the local public transport system or parking garages. This terminal mainly deals with low-cost carriers, such as EasyJet, Ryanair and Wizz Air.

    Airport Facilities

Terminal One, as the main terminal, has the majority of shopping and service facilities at the airport. Along with the standard services you’d expect from an international airport, such as check-in desks, security clearance, lounges, departure gates, luggage reclaim desks, ATM’s, children’s playground, currency exchange desks, you’ll also find plenty of souvenir shops, a post office, coffee houses, restaurants, a pharmacy, and other general shops from top brands.

Terminal Two also has plenty of shops, restaurants and coffee houses to choose from, however, dealing only with departures, this is on a much lesser scale compared with Terminal One. The terminal has multiple check-in desks, security clearance facilities, ATM’s and souvenir shops. It is also good to note that free access to Wi-Fi is offered for 30 minutes throughout both terminal buildings, with phone and tablet charge points throughout.

How to get to and from Lisbon Airport

Being located in the city of Lisbon makes this airport ideal for using local public transport, with several options available. From driving, metro and bus services to taxis. When you rent a car at Lisbon Airport you can easily drive into the city centre or onto one of the main motorways. The A1 takes you north, A8 west, A2 and A12 takes you south towards Setubal and Algarve, whilst the “Segunda Circular” will link you to many of Lisbon’s neighbourhoods and motorways.

From Terminal One you are able to catch the red line metro. The underground service is by far the best method for getting you into central Lisbon quickly and cheaply. You can opt to either buy a single ticket or a daily travelcard. The red line connects to the other metro lines which will allow you to get to most parts of the city quickly. Within 25 minutes you can be in downtown Lisbon, and 15 minutes in Saldanha – Lisbon’s financial district. A daily travelcard is a great option because it will also allow you to use other means of transport within Lisbon.

The Airport also provides connections into Lisbon by bus. Three main bus services exist from Terminal One. The Aerobus, which is more spacious for passengers luggage, the city buses, which take you to various neighbourhoods and the night bus. Lisbon has three major bus terminals – Oriente, Sete Rios and Campo Grande. These hubs also have connections to the metro system and overland trains. Overland trains will take you to various parts of the country, for example, Cascais, Setubal, Sintra and even as far as Porto in the north or Algarve in the south.

Another alternative to a car hire in Lisbon Airport is picking up a taxi. A taxi rank is located outside Terminal One, just outside departures. Official taxis are either cream colour (European standard) or black with a green roof (traditional Portuguese taxis). Taxis will have a sign on the roof with a green light when available. All taxis are metered, although make sure you ask the drive estimated cost before setting off. Taxis are modern and comfortable, consisting of car brands such as Mercedes, Skodas, Citroens and so forth.

    Parking tips

When you rent a car at Lisbon Airport parking couldn’t be easier. Along with a quick drop off zone in front of both terminals, you also have at your disposal a large car park garage situated right of Terminal One. Here you can park and easily walk to the main terminal in just 5 minutes. Terminal Two however, does not have any car parking facilities; therefore if you’re departing from here you’ll have to park at the Terminal One car park and catch a free shuttle bus to Terminal Two.

In addition to the official airport parking garage, you will also find a large array of private car parking garages locally. These are often much cheaper, with options to either book for covered or uncovered spaces. These garages also provide additional offers such as car washing, cleaning, etc. Depending on the garage, you will need to take a quick bus ride to the terminals. Generally 5 to 10 minutes in duration.
