Car Hire at Lisbon Oriente Train Station - Discovering the Portuguese Capital

Originally built to welcome visitors to the Expo 98 World Exposition, Lisbon's impressive Oriente Train Station (Gare do Oriente) is one of the Portuguese capital's main transport hubs. Located by the River Tagus in the north-eastern corner of the city, adjacent to the ultra-modern Parque das Naçôes (where the exposition was held), it was designed by the renowned Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava who also created the Olympic Sports Complex in Athens, the Milwaukee Art Museum, the Turning Torso tower in Malmö and the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge in Dallas.

One of the world's largest railways stations, the Gare do Oriente transport complex encompasses a bustling shopping centre, busy metro station, high-speed intercity services, commuter trains and an international bus station. Lisbon Oriente Train Station is also surrounded by first-class attractions, most notably the award-winning Oceanário de Lisboa (one of Europe's biggest aquariums), the Pavilhão do Conhecimento (a family-orientated science museum) and an exhilarating 1-kilometre-long cablecar ride along the riverbank.

Situated right on the south-western edge of the European continent, with a prime Atlantic location, Portugal's culturally-rich capital city has emerged as one of the world's must-visit cities in recent years due its timeless appeal and rich mix of tourist sights - both old and new. Besides boasting two of the finest art collections on the planet, namely the Gulbenkian and the Ancient Art Museum, it is also great value for money with dozens of low-cost options for families and individuals alike.

Most visitors come to enjoy a ride on Lisbon's iconic trams that have been screeching their way around the city for over a hundred years, while others choose to take a leisurely stroll through the old quarters of Baixa, Bairro Alto, Mouraria and Alfama, around which large parts of the capital developed centuries ago. And there's the historic centre of Belém, a square-mile of imposing monuments and rich maritime architecture set in a relaxing waterfront area built to commemorate Portugal's golden Age of Discovery.

Lisbon is also a popular place from which many visitors choose to enjoy exciting day-trips with dozens of exhilarating excursions easily accessible to anyone with a car hire from Lisbon Oriente Train Station. Recognisable from miles around for its striking hill-top castle, the medieval village of Sintra crowns the list on account of its verdant flora (much of which was collected by Portuguese navigators from all four corners of the world) and the rich ensemble of castles, museums and royal palaces dotted in and around the centre. A trip south of the River Tagus (across the mighty 25 April Suspension Bridge) offers a different type of visitor experience with some of Portugal's best beaches to be found along Lisbon's 30-kilometre stretch of sandy shoreline known as the Costa da Caparica.
