London’s train stations are not only busy transportation hubs but iconic landmarks right in the centre of town. Opened in 1868, St Pancras train station is one of the oldest in London and in recent years has grown into a major international arrival point for travellers from a host of European cities, such as Paris, Brussels, Lille, Lyon, Avignon, Marseille, Rotterdam and Amsterdam. A masterpiece of Victorian Gothic architecture, St Pancras International (as it is officially known) boasts more underground connections than any other London station. It is also the terminus for four of southern England's main railway services, namely Eurostar, East Midlands Railway, Southeastern and ThamesLink.
King's Cross is another of London’s most famous train stations to have metamorphosed into one of the city's most prominent transport hubs. Located a short walk from St Pancras International, it was originally built as a monument dedicated to King George IV (hence the name) and rose to fame recently as a regular setting for the Harry Potter films. If you're arriving at King's Cross by train, the chances are you've travelled down from Scotland or the north of England, including York and Newcastle, making King’s Cross a major connection point in the centre of London.
Paddington, likewise, has come a long way since its inauguration in 1854 with a multi-million pound makeover designed to create a bustling airport-style environment. Regular trains arrive in Paddington from key cities in the south-west, including Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter, along with the Heathrow Express which runs every 15 minutes. Situated in close proximity to London’s biggest tourist attractions, namely Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace, Victoria Train Station is one of the city’s busiest connection points with the added advantage of having Victoria Coach Station a short distance away. It is also the terminus for the Gatwick Express, a non-stop service from Gatwick Airport running up to four times an hour.
Opened in 1837, Euston is the fifth-busiest train station in Britain and one of the main gateways to London from the West Midlands, North-west England, North Wales and Scotland. Of equal importance, Waterloo Train Station is another of London’s major railway termini located close to the River Thames in central London. Close to many top tourist attractions, the most popular being the London Eye, it is the main receiver of services coming in from the southern and western parts of England.
