" Upon checkout (Lyon Exupery Airport), I was told by staff that I would receive an email containing instructions regarding my out-of-hours key return. No email arrived. Several days later, I sent a request via the Europcar online portal but received no reply. When I called Europcar, they told me to return the car to carpark B2 (which doesn't exist) and my keys to a Europcar desk in T1 (which also doesn't exist). Finally, I had to interrupt by trip and drive to the airport on the day before departure to understand how to return my car and keys. A frustratingly poor service. I also remarked that during check-out, staff talk openly between themselves about their clientele. When we picked up the keys, the counter staff gave us the wrong keys, i.e I received the keys for the van hired under my sister in laws name and she was given the keys for van hired under my name. Unfortunately, I broke the wing mirror on the van that I was driving and this exchange of keys only came to light when we returned the vehicles. Yes, we should have checked the contracts but they had already been placed in the vans and, as it was gone 11pm and had a fair way to drive, we were keen to get on the road (thank god we didn't have a more serious accident/incident). This kind of error is easily done but the potential ramifications are enormous. It's a shame because otherwise the service was great but an error like that simply should not happen. "

" There has been some very good and some very bad. First, I was impressed by the pick up experience, given that the staff waited until 01:00am to ensure we could pick up our vehicle due to a delayed aircraft. Now the bad part. The vehicle was not full (despite the gauge showing full). I did a roundtrip of 394km and refuel the vehicle after half of the trip at Super U pont du chateau . The receipt shows 17.10L. On the way back I refilled at Netto Pusignan. The receipt shows 8.86L. The gauge started to go down after approximately 150km. The staff when returning the vehicle was unhelpful and challenged the calculations on the basis of the average consumption for trip A (which wasn't reset for my trip). She claimed that it was OK since you are entitled to refuel within 30km which the calculations show that, beyond any reasonable doubt, this was not the case. She also claimed that receipt were checked when cars are returned without evidence. I had to go to catch my plane, there was no point in arguing. "

I provided photographic evidence of scratches on one wheel, of which Hertz had no record, so the assistant eventually agreed that I was not responsible for the other scratches on the wheels. The scratch on the bodywork was so faint it could hardly be seen. I had not taken a photograph of it, because I had not even noticed it when picking up the car. The vehicle had a number of scratches and dents when it was collected, only some of which were recorded by Hertz. I felt that the company was determined to charge me for something, even thought there was no damage to the car during my rental period. In the past, I have had similar problems with Hertz and I will not be using this company again. By contrast, Europcar and Rentscape do not engage in these petty arguments, so I will use these companies in future. "

" My ratings are based on this very unusual experience with Keddy/Europcar, but I would be careful in future. Does Keddy use older, more damaged vehicles from the Europcar fleet? I have never had a single problem with Europcar or Keddy in the past, so I will keep an open mind. "
" The agent was not at all typical of all my previous experiences with Europcar. He was very pushy trying to persuade us to pay 100 Euros extra for a vehicle upgrade. I also declined his efforts to sell excess insurance because I have an annual policy. On signing the contract I remarked on the long list of damage (7 items) and said it would be difficult to check in the dark. Arriving at the vehicle I tried to check, but it was inpossible to see. I also noted the vehicle unusually had 64,154 kms on the clock. I returned to the desk and asked for a different vehicle, but the agent refused. He also refused my request for a downgrade to a lower mileage/less damaged vehicle. This was also refused. He said Europcar does not allow a downgrade!! The following morning I photographed all the vehicle and corrected several important errors in the list of damage and emailed it to the agent. I did not damage the vehicle during my rental and on return fortunately there was no problem. In recent years I have rented dozens of times in France and Switzerland with Europcar (sometimes Keddy), often with Auto Europe, and have never had any problems at all. Let's hope this was an exception. "

When politely challenging the clerk and asking what alternative cars were available ( from what appeared a full car park of very new vehicles) I was offered a Volvo XC40/60 for an extra 25€. He then forgot to mention it was per day !! Then he came back and said he had miss quoted me and that he couldn't fulfil that price. With 50+ mins past since we arrived, I couldn't waste anymore time so reluctantly took the Toyota. Felt like a Taxi driver leaving the airport! Nothing else to add, but I hope you agree based on what I experienced and the feedback provided it was a shockingly poor experience. "

He failed, but it was probably a hour from arriving at the office to actually getting into our car . . As a result we missed our evening meal at the hotel because we were too late. These are items which can be bought for a few euros and are hardly ever actually used, but renters have to pay around 15/16 euros a day for them. For a seven day rental it's not that far off the price you pay for the actual car. They should either be offered as standard or at a significantly lower price. At present it is an absolute racket for the hire companies. "

Given that I had no way of checking this at the time with Auto Europe, they effectively left me with no option but to take out insurance (at Euros 224 for 8 days), nearly doubling the price of the car hire. I subsequently found out through Auto Europe that what they had told me was false, and that there was insurance on the car (both 3rd party and comprehensive cover with a maximum liability of Euros 1,600 if the car was totally written off). On the return, the local petrol station had NO petrol at all. NONE - no diesel; no unleaded. Quite unbelievable. So we had to ask for the nearest alternative and get guidance for our GPS... it was not easy to find and a ten minute drive. If we'd been running late, we would not have had the time to do this and would have been compelled to ask Europcar to fill up the tank... at c€5 per litre + admin! I'm assuming that this is what they're hoping would happen. (Do they have a profit share with the local petrol station for this?? I believe this is sharp business practice.) The sense throughout was that Europcar were trying to find every excuse to charge extra... now that they had me and that I had no other choice. "

When we arrived we were offered a Toyota CHR, which would have barely taken 1 suitcase. We then ended up having to upgrade to a BMW 3 series estate in order to get our luggage in for our planned ski trip. " We are long time customers of Auto Europe and always very happy with the service. The only trouble this time was the difficulty getting unexpected changes made within the 72 hour window, and the excess insurance not being possible to extend along with the car hire. "

Only issue was BA cancelling our flights both ways and being unable to get through by phone to Hertz Lyon Airport to make necessary changes. Auto Europe staff although sympathetic were unable to do much with it being late notice. This was very stressful. Hertz at Chambery eventually agreed to make the changes for us by phone. The other issue was our Auto Europe zero excess cover not being available for the extra day we needed, and Hertz not able to offer cover for the extra day either, as we hadn't taken out the original insurance with them. This felt like a catch 22 situation that neither party's rules could allow for. "

" It's was Eurocar which I presume is through Keddy. Upon arrival there was only 2 people in the desk with a big queue of people. So took over an hour to get the car. They then wanted to charge me £22 a day for winter tyres or £20 for snow chains a day. I could buy the same set of chains in the local spar shop for £40. And then own them. They also wanted to charge me extra for insurance even though I'd taken the higher insurance out. That had done 30k and was quite rattlley like something wasn't right. The service was due in 400km even though I had it with unlimited miles. Not overly impressed. "

I don't believe this was clear in the original booking. The person doing the contract, who was pleasant enough, said there was no way she could release the vehicle unless we paid. Company policy. " Unfortunately 2 days after making my reservation, and paying the extra to enable changes/cancellations, I had my trip cancelled due covid 19 restrictions. I tried to get in touch to cancel my booking, but with no email confirmation of my booking, or any form of correspondence in actual fact It was impossible to reach anybody that could help. I was told this could not be put on at the time of booking and I would have to pay for this locally at the airport in Lyon (Geneva where I normally go, all cars come winterised) On arrival I was told winter tyres were not available at all but I could have snow chains - for €58 ! luckily I didn't need to use them, on returning the car I showed the agent the chains to confirm I was returning them and then he informed me I had actually bought them, rather than rented them. If I didn't take them, they would sell them to the next customer! It also transpired they were not Snow chains, but textile snow socks, which are far less efficient. The system and the price was a complete rip off. I checked at a superstore and you can buy these items there for half the price !!! I also am still waiting to have my €250 euro deposit refunded, even though he said he had authorised it at the time. When I checked my credit card on returning, they don't just block the money they actually take it out and it debits your card and you have to wait for them to refund it. "

" When we collected the car we were told that we could either bring the car back full of fuel or not. If the tank was only partly full or empty we would be charged 70 euros. We were also told that the petrol station at the air port was closing so we would have to fill the tank prior to return in a neighbouring town. We filled the tank before returning the car - we were then charged the 70 euros for fuel by the company which we are disputing, also the petrol station at the airport was open so we wasted time driving 7 kilometers to find a petrol station when we did not need to (the petrol station was very difficult to find and added about 30 minutes to the time we had to check in). The condition of the car when collected was not accurately as told to us. We were told the car was perfect (although apparently was noted on documentation that the rental company had but not on our documents that there is a dent on the drivers door). We collected when dark and were told to examine the car before 10 am the next morning which we did and noted the dent. We took pictures but when we returned the car we were told that they knew about the dent - why put us to that inconvenience when it was totally unnecessary? We have had problems with this company when renting a car in France before (they paid a parking ticket adding an exhorbitent service charge on top which we successfully disputed). Basically, the impression of the French part of this company is that they try to charge additional fees (in this instance for petrol) in the hope that the customer will not notice so that the profits for the company can be increased. We are now in the position of having to spend time disputing the charge for petrol when the car was returned with a full tank which means time and effort on our part whilst the company has use of the money in the interim. If the company does that on (say) 100 rentals per month the increased income is in the region of 700 euros per month, multiply that by the number of outlets an you have a substantial amount on money that is charged incorrectly and in most cases probably not noticed. The whole situation is appalling. "

" This was a car with electronic push button ignition and automatic electronic handbrake. It gradually became clear that the handbrake did not always unlock when taking off from a stationary position. It was hard to know how to handle this. This first time it happened (the first day, I assumed that I had not engaged the acclerator sufficiently. When I accelerated a bit more, the brake unlocked and the car leapt forward, with the offside passenger wheel and undercarriage colliding with the pavement. As time went on it became clear that the electronic screen was faulty so that the screens/icons were not reliable and would fade or disappear e.g. for most of the time I was driving without a petrol gauge. By the last day I the screen only displayed the most basic informaiton. This was very stressful as we were in hilly country with a 2 year old passenger. The matter was well handled by Alamo when I returned the car to the airport and I was not charged the excess. My objective in sharing this with you is to suggest that this information should be displayed when selecting and booking a car for hire. I would never have chosen such a car had I known as I was travelling with a 2yr old child. I would want this information to be available when hiring a car in the future. "

We then waited for 2hrs 45 minutes for a taxi sent by Avis to return us to the original collection office. Waited a further 40 minutes to be dealt with. The 1st replacement vehicle did not hold our luggage. Another 20 minutes to sort out a 3rd vehicle. We finally arrived at our accomodation 8 and a half hours later than expected only to find out that we could not check in until the following morning. "

I was not happy with the car as it felt too small with child seats so I spend over 2 hours on the phone locally to try and sort the problem. I eventually got through to the right person and he told me to return to the rental office and get them to get the right class of car that I had booked. I returned and it was all sorted - another 3 hours involved here. It would be helpful if rental agencies make it very clear that they do not have the correct car requested and so will be dropping a class. I would have happily taken a smaller car and then could have changed to the one I had booked 3 days later when I had to return to the airport to pick up family. This would have saved me the 2 hours on the phone and the extra 3 hours going back the following day! "

" I rented a small car from Lyon airport to meet my family in a remote location in la Drôme. On arrival, I asked at the counter if the car had no issues. The euro-car agent told me that there was nothing at all, in fact the paperwork was showing this. Before driving off the car, I inspected it very quickly. Nothing was really noticeable, and I also trusted your advisor at the Lyon airport pickup. I drove to my family place, in the middle of no where, where the car stayed. I mean really in the middle of nowhere. On my return, the inspection agent told me there were scratches on the car. She was quite condescending to me, when I did say I look after the car. I was really shocked. On very close inspection, I did notice the small damage in the paint. So, either the previous agent did not notice it like I didn't either or it was not notified to me correctly. I have had a really bad experience and quite upset about it. I am an honest person and look after things. And like I said, I drove on the motorway and countryside lanes to park the car for three days!!!. I do sincerely hope they are not going to charge me for this. I do have a high respect for fairness and I believe that I have not been treated fairly. "

This was not a term and condition that was highlighted and I would say that this is a major problem that needs immediate correction. similarly I then discovered from your operator that they are not allowed to contact the hire company if the delay is more than 2 hours. This again left me with the risk of no appropriate vehicle and potentially no reimbursement. I could not speak with the hire company direct as they would only dealt with the agent you. these terms should be renegotiated of if not openly highlighted on your website and documentation as they are onerous and potentially very expensive. All in all the experience when knowing this added to the stress of a very long day with the only hope as your operator said being the hope that the hire company had not rehired the vehicle out "

Again, I think he was having a bad day. We got our car and child seat, so from that point of view, all good, just unfortunately was all conducted under a cloud of frustration from the Agent. My gut tells me it was something to do with the fact that our booking was an Auto-Europe one rather than AVIS, but that's just my opinion. "

" Firstly we got a car that was smaller than the one we had paid for. We had booked a "Fiat Punto" or similar, and we got a smaller Fiat Panda. The car was dirty on pick-up, this was noted on paperwork. We dropped it off clean, of course. The brakes were wearing out, as they made a noise every time you touched the brake pedal. They will need replacing soon. The oil level was low, and so on a tight corner the warning noise went off to alert you to a low oil level. I do not think the cars are maintained very well at all. Certainly not to the level I would expect from Europcar or Hertz, etc "

As I accepted the hire vehicle in the dark I could not check out the vehicle condition. However the receptionist made me aware of the option to inspect in daylight and report any non notified/specified damage. On checking the next day there were two scratches on the bonnet which I reported. I later noticed that the driver side front tyre was wearing badly on one side, it would be an advisory on a UK MOT. Never had a hire car that the tracking was out for 30 years!! Reported when dropped off. Everything else OK. "

" The car was not in a good state, the back seats had cigarette burns and it wasn't very clean inside. Damage to the front and the wheel hub wasn't marked and I had to go back twice to point it out. I had requested snow chains but there weren't any, not a huge problem, because I bought some in Grenoble for less than the hire fee. However being winter and it snowed a lot, the state of the tyres is very important and my car had not very good tyres. I can't imagine why cars in Lyon and Grenoble do not have winter tyres - I should imagine that more than 60% of the car hire is for skiing. "
