When politely challenging the clerk and asking what alternative cars were available ( from what appeared a full car park of very new vehicles) I was offered a Volvo XC40/60 for an extra 25€. He then forgot to mention it was per day !! Then he came back and said he had miss quoted me and that he couldn't fulfil that price. With 50+ mins past since we arrived, I couldn't waste anymore time so reluctantly took the Toyota. Felt like a Taxi driver leaving the airport! Nothing else to add, but I hope you agree based on what I experienced and the feedback provided it was a shockingly poor experience. "

At present it is an absolute racket for the hire companies. "

They then wanted to charge me £22 a day for winter tyres or £20 for snow chains a day. I could buy the same set of chains in the local spar shop for £40. And then own them. They also wanted to charge me extra for insurance even though I'd taken the higher insurance out. That had done 30k and was quite rattlley like something wasn't right. I would have noticed something hitting the windscreen whilst driving the car, but nothing did in the week in which I hired it. Very suspicious that such a small mark could be picked up immediately on a insect strewn windscreen. I am 99% certain the technician concerned had tried that ploy with previous drivers. "
" Everything went perfectly until the vehicle check when I returned it at Lyon Airport. The technician that viewed the vehicle ignored all the scratches and marks that were noted when I picked the vehicle up, instead went directly to the windscreen and pointed out a 'chip' in it. The chip was barely visible (it was the size of a ballpoint pen nib), yet he pointed it out immediately. How he could have seen it with the number of dead/squashed insects on the windscreen is beyond me. In fact it seemed more than suspicious that this incredibly small mark could be viewed from the distance that he maintains he originally saw it from. Thankfully I paid for additional insurance, otherwise I would have been made to pay for this 'chip' that must have been on the windscreen before I picked it up. I fear for the hirer of the vehicle after me as they would have had to pay for it if they were not covered. Shame on you! "

Then I was informed that as it was going to be more than 2 hours after the designated pick up time the hire company had no obligation to hold the vehicle for me even though they had been paid both by you and me. This was not a term and condition that was highlighted and I would say that this is a major problem that needs immediate correction. similarly I then discovered from your operator that they are not allowed to contact the hire company if the delay is more than 2 hours. This again left me with the risk of no appropriate vehicle and potentially no reimbursement. I could not speak with the hire company direct as they would only dealt with the agent you. these terms should be renegotiated of if not openly highlighted on your website and documentation as they are onerous and potentially very expensive. All in all the experience when knowing this added to the stress of a very long day with the only hope as your operator said being the hope that the hire company had not rehired the vehicle out "

" Our Avis agent at Lyon was professional but clearly unhappy about something. I suggest that frustrations, professional or otherwise should be better hidden from customers. Avis had queries over our booking unfortunately involved a call to Auto Europe at the desk, The Avis agent was hostile towards the AutoEurope agent over the phone. For example, the Avis agent refused to offer his name, and later remarked to us that he, 'no longer wanted to speak to that man'; not really what a customer needs to hear. We upgraded the car at the counter and found the car to be in clean and in very good condition. Only slight negative was that prior to our visit, I contacted the telephone centre for advice - I didn't know the pin number to my credit card (although there was ample credit available to me) - I was told I wouldn't need the pin number and therefore, no worry. However, on arrival the pin number was required and had I not had access to another card, this would have presented a significant problem. "

" Firefly was interesting in that they will charge 12 if the car interior needs "cleaning". This was a new clause to me. As I accepted the hire vehicle in the dark I could not check out the vehicle condition. However the receptionist made me aware of the option to inspect in daylight and report any non notified/specified damage. On checking the next day there were two scratches on the bonnet which I reported. I later noticed that the driver side front tyre was wearing badly on one side, it would be an advisory on a UK MOT. Never had a hire car that the tracking was out for 30 years!! Reported when dropped off. Everything else OK. "

" The car was not in a good state, the back seats had cigarette burns and it wasn't very clean inside. Damage to the front and the wheel hub wasn't marked and I had to go back twice to point it out. I had requested snow chains but there weren't any, not a huge problem, because I bought some in Grenoble for less than the hire fee. However being winter and it snowed a lot, the state of the tyres is very important and my car had not very good tyres. I can't imagine why cars in Lyon and Grenoble do not have winter tyres - I should imagine that more than 60% of the car hire is for skiing. "
