Yes – a valid credit card under the main driver’s name is a requirement for collecting you vehicle in Slovenia. Some suppliers may ask for two or more credit cards. This is largely dependent on the car type you hire. The supplier will use your credit card to hold a security deposit – amount of which is noted on your voucher’s terms and conditions. Debit cards are not accepted for security deposit purposes. The deposit will only be released once you return the car in the same condition as when it left.
It is therefore highly advised that you check the car during pick-up, noting anything of concern on the pick-up slip and taking photographic or video evidence. When you return the car, make sure a member of the car hire supplier staff checks the vehicle. The staff member should sign the drop-off slip to confirm the vehicle is in the exact condition as when it left. Failure to do this may mean a delay in returning your deposit, or in the supplier using your deposit to rectify any issues with the car. All major credit cards are accepted, including Visa and Mastercard.
All base rates include the minimum legally required insurance coverage for Slovenia. These are Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), Theft Protection (TP) and Liability Insurance. This minimal coverage does not cover every eventuality. We therefore requirement if possible, taking out the Full Damage & Theft Protection Cover. For a small daily fee, your rental will be covered for any damage or loss to keys, damage to the roof, wheels, glass and more.
Many local suppliers offer other insurances once you arrive. These are fully optional and paid directly to the supplier. Auto Europe does not recommend or profit in any way from these additional local insurances. No refund is provided by us even if it is deemed afterwards to have not been necessary. For the most part, if you have already taken out our Full Damage & Theft Protection Cover, no other insurances will be needed. Local said insurances can include, Personal Effects Insurance (PEC), Personal Accident Insurance (PAI), Roadside Assistance and many more. Consult our car hire coverage section to find out more about available car insurance coverages.
The city suffers from very little traffic problems, but congestion does exist during rush hour, at key locations. Main interchanges and especially the old town can sometimes see traffic, although this is nothing compared with other European capital cities. Expect some congestion during the weekend or Friday night, around the centre of the city and by its riverside. Popular tourist attractions can also see some congestion depending on the time of year. We would encourage you to have a read of our road rules and regulations section for driving your car rental in Ljubljana.
There are plenty of secure parking options around the city in the form of car parks, many of which are open 24-hours and are monitored with CCTV. Free on-street parking is hard to come by in central Ljubljana so we recommend parking just outside the city ring road and catching public transport into the central areas. On-street paid parking operates a pay-&-display system. Here you’ll need to obtain a ticket from the ticket machine and display this inside the vehicle’s windscreen. Pay attention to local parking signage to avoid parking in restricted areas, such as in residential or commercial parking bays.
Yes – there are just under 370-miles of motorways that operate a toll system in Slovenia. Tolls are run by DARS a national motorway company. To and from Ljubljana specifically, you will come across tolls linking Ljubljana to Trojane, Pluska, Podtabor, Krtina and Lukovica. For vehicles under 3.5 tones, a vignette system applies. These can be purchased at a Agip petrol station, including at a variety of resellers or at toll points.
Vignettes are available to cover a week, month, 6-months or a year. The vignette is only valid if properly displayed in the vehicle before using the toll roads. This should be on the left-inner side of the windscreen. The vignette must be properly perforated by the seller in accordance with the duration purchased.
Yes – you may drive your car into neighbouring Austria, Italy and Croatia however, an additional fee will be charged by the supplier and the insurance adapted to your needs. During your search make sure to note all proposed countries you wish to enter. Failure to do so may cause your insurance to be void and make you fully responsible for any issues that may arise outside of Slovenia. The fee is paid locally to the supplier and the amount is dependant of the car category, duration of rental and locations desired.
Although Ljubljana is Slovenia’s capital city, it is relatively smaller compared with other European capitals. This is not to say that it does not have plenty to see and do – because it does have some marvellous tourist attractions and points of interest. However, it is when you head out of Ljubljana that the magical of Slovenia really opens up. A country full of lush countryside, interesting wildlife and intriguing history. This section will introduce you to some stunning places and places to visit.
Ljubljana is pretty centrally located in the country, and as such, makes for a great place to start exploring Slovenia from. With a car hire in Ljubljana you can easily head further afield. From millennia old caves to lush natural parks and picturesque traditional villages, such as Bled – Slovenia as it all. Fairy-tale castles, large lakes to enjoy and skiing opportunities around every corner. Here is what we recommend for an unforgettable road trip in Slovenia.
Vogel: If skiing is very much on your holiday wish list, then we would highly recommend driving your car hire from Ljubljana to Vogel. It may seem like a long way away; it is however in our opinion worth the effort. The drive should take you no more than 2 hours and a half – covering around 60-miles. Once you arrive at the Vogel ski resort, you’ll quickly see how great it is for skiing and snowboarding. It is no wonder, thousands of visitors from across Europe arrive here during the winter months alone. The slopes are suitable for beginners and more advanced skiers. Located in Triglav National Park, visiting outside of the winter months is just as beautiful and inspiring.
Postojna Caves: If century old caves are your thing, then we would advise visiting Postojna Caves. Taking around 41-minutes from Ljubljana, these caves are only 33-miles away. A large cave complex, so large in fact, that visitors can even board a small train that will take you leisurely through parts of the cave network. These natural caves are simply beautiful and very diverse. Especially nice during the warm summer months, due to its cool interior. Near the cave is also Predjama Castle – ideal for exploring once you have checked out the caves.
Triglav National Park: Taking around 41-minutes and covering 37-miles from Ljubljana by car, Triglav National Park is mesmerizingly beautiful. Consisting of rugged mountains, spectacular calm lakes and a dramatic landscape full of wonderful fauna, flowers, forests and interesting wildlife. The beginning of Trigalav National Park is close to Ljubljana; however, the park reaches out for miles. If you live exploring, bicycling and hiking, then we highly recommend a day trip here.
Soca Valley: If you enjoy extreme sports and activities, then pay a visit to Soca Valley – an area that seems almost built for this purpose. The valley provides lots of adventure and outdoor activities. If ziplining, paragliding and white-water rafting sound like your thing – then in as little as an hour and twenty-four minutes (74-miles), you could be right in the heart of the Soca Valley. If you’re the relaxing type, all is not lost – for along with extreme activities, the valley also provides plenty of hiking opportunities and areas to unwind and picnic in.
Road trips are great, you get to see exactly what Slovenia is all about – however, staying in Ljubljana can also be as much fun. The city is perfect for exploring and much of it is in walking distance. The river has loads of traditional coffee houses and restaurants – coupled with entertainment. Consider adding a free additional driver to your booking and share the joy of driving in this pleasant relatively traffic-free city. Many suppliers provide free additional drivers, whilst others may charge a small daily fee. Here is what we would recommend visiting during your stay in Ljubljana.
