Car hire in Tel Aviv – Hub of the Middle East

    Car hire in Tel Aviv

Situated at the eastern edge of the Mediterranean in a prime seaside location, Tel Aviv is unique for the wide variety of travel experiences it offers its many visitors throughout the year. With its long pristine coastline and pulsating night-life, the city was originally built in the 20th century when the influx of Jews fleeing Europe threatened to overrun neighbouring Jaffa. Today, Tel Aviv's rich mix of history, culture, society and architecture make it a must-visit destination for travellers looking to soak up the inviting atmosphere of one of the world's warmest and most welcoming capitals.

With its long hot summers and pleasantly mild winters, it's an excellent place to visit at any time of the year, especially for those who book a car hire in Tel Aviv and explore the rest of Israel at their own pace. The capital is the perfect base for visiting some of the top sites and attractions around Israel, including Jerusalem (just 45 minutes away by car), Bethlehem (a 90-minute drive to the south-east) and the enchanting and very historical Sea of Galilee, which lies less than 2 hours from the centre of Tel Aviv by car.

Tel Aviv (Hebrew for 'Spring Hill') is a city of wonderful contrasts with some of the most striking architecture anywhere. It's a modern metropolis with an impressive collection of some 4,000 registered historical buildings (the world’s largest collection), all built in the Bauhaus/International Style of architecture. It is also a world-class fine-dining destination with an abundance of top-end restaurants, fashionable bistros and authentic hole-in-the-wall eateries dotted all over the city.

Frequently asked questions about renting a car in Tel Aviv

This section features the most frequent questions asked by people booking a car hire in Tel Aviv. Scroll down for important tips relating to a wide range of essential car hire topics, such as credit cards, coverage, tolls, traffic and much more. If you need any more information, please reach out to our reservations team and they will be happy to help you with your reservation and assist you with your travel itinerary.

Do I need a credit card to rent a car in Tel Aviv?

Yes. During the pick-up process, the local supplier will require a credit card in the name of the main driver registered on the rental contract. The reason for this is that they will need to hold a depositwhich will be duly released back to you once the vehicle has been returned in exactly the same condition as when it left car rental station. It is important to make sure that the supplier carries out a full check of the vehicle and signs it off on the contract as undamaged before you leave the premises. Please note that for a standard car hire in Tel Aviv, only one credit card will be required, but for a vehicle in the luxury category, sometimes two credit cards (ie Visa, Mastercard, Diners and American Express) will be requested due to the high value of such cars. To check which card (and type) is acceptable, just click on the blue and white 'i' icon under the car details after making a search in the Auto Europe booking engine. It is important to confirm that you have enough funds on your credit card for the deposit amount to be held. Please take a look at our dedicated guide to credit cards for additional information.

What insurance do I need for my car rental in Tel Aviv?

The good news is that all the rates published on our website come with the minimum amount of legally-required car hire coverage when you rent a car in Tel Aviv and elsewhere in Israel, including Liability Insurance, Theft Protection (TP) and Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) which may or may not require an excess. Please note that CDW does not cover damage to all parts of the vehicle, in which case we suggest our protection Full Damage & Theft Protection cover. This will cover you for any damage to the car's wheels, glass, roof, etc. for a small additional cost which is determined by your chosen car category, location and rental duration.

To find out how much (and what kind) of coverage is included in the rate and whether or not any fees will be added to your booking, please make a quick search in the Auto Europe booking engine and click on the blue and white 'i' icon in the car details (note that the same information is included in the terms and conditions).

Some customers are surprised when the staff of the local car rental supplier offers them additional insurance (such as Personal Accident Insurance, Personal Effects Coverage, Super CDW, Seguro Relax, Roadside Assistance, etc.) when they arrive to pick up their vehicle. This is entirely optional and very often surplus to your requirements, especially if you have already purchased Auto Europe's excellent Full Damage & Theft Protection cover. It's also important to note that any insurance you sign up to directly with the supplier at the time of collection cannot be refunded by Auto Europe regardless of the situation.

How is the traffic in Tel Aviv?

Generally speaking, driving in Tel Aviv and the rest of Israel is an enjoyable and rewarding experience with the rules of the road very similar to most other destinations. Try to avoid the early morning and late-afternoon rush-hours during the week if possible, especially on Thursday when the Israelis are preparing for the Sabbath. In Tel Aviv, they drive on the right side of the road in Israel and the laws regarding seatbelts (must be worn) and mobile phone usage (must never be used at the wheel) are the same. In general, the speed limit in Tel Aviv is 50kph in urban areas, 80kph in non-urban areas, 100kph on Highway 1 between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv and 120kph on Highway 6 (the country's main north-south toll road). Please note that alcohol levels for drivers under 24 years old are 10 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood and 50 micrograms per 100 milliliters of breath. For all other drivers, the limits are 50 milligrams of alcohol per 100 milliliters of blood, 240 micrograms per 100 milliliters of breath. Headlights must be turned on at all times on intercity highways from 1 November until 31 March. Israel introduced HOV (special car-share) lanes at the end of 2019 on the Ayalon Highway and Route 2 around Tel Aviv, with more planned in the future.

For more info on driving in Tel Aviv and other parts of the country, please consult our Israel Driving Guide for advice on the local age restrictions, driving distances, road rules, motorway tolls, etc.

Where can I park my car hire in Tel Aviv?

Like any large city, it's worth doing a bit of advanced planning when choosing a place to park your car rental in Tel Aviv. The first thing to remember is that parking is not permitted on any road in the city where the curbs marked red and white, and red and yellow markings denote bus stops or spaces reserved for public transport. However, parking is permitted on streets marked blue and white and for most of the week. Be sure to check the local road signs in case of any exceptions to the rule. Tel Aviv is a hot city (especially during the summer) so you might want to consider the many underground car parks which nowadays have red and green lights to signify whether spaces are available inside as well as how many spaces are available. Additionally, there are plenty of parking spaces available at Tel Aviv Airport, with over 6,000 in the long-term car park alone, which is open 24/7 right through the year.

Do I need to pay tolls when driving my car hire in Tel Aviv?

Yes, depending on where you go. Currently there are only three toll roads in Israel, the longest one being the Route 6 (or Kvish Shesh) that runs across the centre of the country. When you rent a car in Tel Aviv, you'll need to be aware of the the payable on the Highway 1 Fast lane which is a 13-kilometre stretch of road running from the city's Ben Gurion International Airport to the Kibbutz Galuyot Exit. There is also a tunnel toll road cutting through the Carmel mountains in the north of the Israel in the city of Haifa.

Can I drive my car hire in Tel Aviv into the West Bank and the Gaza Strip?

Currently no. Travel is not permitted with any of the suppliers offering car hire in Tel Aviv on the Auto Europe website.
