Closely connected with the creation of Lego, the world's most famous toy, Billund is a small and very prosperous town conveniently located in the heart of Denmark, in very close proximity to many of the country's most popular tourist attractions. Billund is the second-most visited destination after the capital, Copenhagen, plus it is a regular gateway for visitors looking to enjoy all the natural beauty of the Jutland Peninsular.
From Billund, travellers have access to a wealth of interesting places, such as Kolding (an upmarket seaside resort), Vejle (a town notable for its dazzling architecture), Jelling (a Unesco World Heritage Site) and Ribe (a laid-back town with a charming historic centre) and Aarhus, Denmark's second city. Furthermore, with a car hire in Billund it's easily possible to spend a day or two in Copenhagen which is a manageable 3-hour drive away (260 kilometres) on the E20.
But most people go to Billund for its wide-ranging family appeal which stems from its association with Lego, which means 'play well' (leg godt, in the Danish language). A local carpenter (Ole Kirk Christiansen) invented the toy midway through the last century and its legacy continues to this day with a set of attractions and theme parks targeted at fun-seeking families with young children.
