    Road rules and petrol stations

When travelling by car hire in Bulgaria, it is best to know the Cyrillic alphabet. Although most of the road signs are in the Latin alphabet, some of them have information in Cyrillic. Vehicles drive on the right hand-side of the road and the speed limits for cars are 50 kph (31 mph) in town, 90 kph (56 mph) outside of town, 120 kph (75 mph) on express ways, and 140 kph (87 mph) on motorways. It is advisable to use motorways when driving from Sofia to Burgas and Varna, otherwise, choose express ways where possible. Check our Bulgaria driving information page for more traffic rules.

Petrol stations are located along the main roads, and in cities and towns. The premises are either open 24/7 or from 6am to 10pm daily in smaller towns. It is best to pay in cash to avoid provision fees for debit cards and credit cards are not accepted country-wide.

    Time difference

Bulgaria is two hours ahead of the United Kingdom and observes daylight saving times as well.

Bulgarian electrical appliances run at the 220V/50 Hz. There are European plug sockets in use, so bring along an adapter.
