Car hire in Slovenia - A Land of History and Spectacular Scenery

    Car hire in Slovenia

A country of ancient castles, inviting caves, fairy-tale landscapes and some of the best-value thermal spas in the whole of Europe, Slovenia is quickly gaining popularity as a low-cost, high-quality tourist destination with an enormous range of activities and sightseeing opportunities to offer. Idyllically set in the southern part of central Europe, it is a predominantly mountainous country with breathtaking vistas of the Alps, plus an abundance of dense green forests and deep valleys. Almost half of Slovenia is covered by woods, which makes it one of the greenest countries in the world and a lovely place to visit, especially by car.

Slovenia lies by the Adriatic Sea and borders with Italy to the west, Austria to the north, Hungary to the east and Croatia to the south, which makes it the perfect place for exploring both central and southern Europe. All across the country there are small towns and villages notable for their historic architecture, peaceful urban environment and elegant beauty. Furthermore, a plethora of outdoor activities await more active visitors to the country, such as hiking, skiing, bird-watching, rock climbing, cycling, kayaking and white-water rafting.

With its ancient hilltop castle and many splendid art nouveau buildings, Slovenia's centrally-located capital city, Ljubljana, is the country's economic and cultural hub. It is also a good base from which to visit the country's best wine-making region whose history stretches back many centuries to the arrival of the Celts in 5 BC. With a car hire in Slovenia you'll have the chance to explore many other interesting parts of the country, such as the Julian Alps, a world of snow-capped peaks, pretty villages and mountain streams where the Vršič Pass (with an elevation of 1,611 metres) gives acces to a mountain road that links Kranjska Gora with Bovec, offering many scenic photo opportunities along the way.

Slovenia is a place that has unlimited potential for interesting day trips as well as many exhilarating road trips to regions largely unexplored by the modern tourist. Don't miss Lake Bled (one of Europe's most picturesque lakes) which is sky-blue in colour with a picture-postcard church set on a small island and medieval castle clinging to a cliff. Other options include Piran, which is one of the best-preserved medieval Venetian ports in the world and a place where an al fresco lunch of freshly-caught fish will most likely be the culinary highlight of your trip. The city of Bled itself is only 35 miles away from Ljubljana and the perfect day trip for people staying in the capital. Other points of interest include Maribor (Slovenia's second-largest city) and Kranjska Gora, a wonderful alpine resort located in the north-west of the country.

The idea of this section is to provide a list of the most popular questions that arise when hiring a car in Slovenia. Just click on the link and you'll find all the info you need, or if you prefer you can speak to one of our rental specialists in person who are on duty 7 days a week and can help resolve any issues you might have prior to finalising your car rental reservation.

How old do I have to be to rent a car in Slovenia?

Drivers must be at least 18 years old to be eligible to rent a car in Slovenia. Please note that some local car hire suppliers might impose a minumum age requirement of 21, plus anyone under the age of 26 may incur an additional Young Driver Surcharge, which is paid locally to the car hire supplier. Please refer to our Car Hire Age Requirements page for a comprehensive overview for drivers, both young and old.

It's easy to find all the information relating to age restrictions (and any additional charges) by making a quick search on the Auto Europe website. In our booking engine, you just need to select your preferred category and supplier and click on the blue and white info icon (i) to find all the details you need relating to your low-cost car hire in Slovenia. The same information will also be sent in the Terms and Conditions once the reservation is confirmed.

It's important that young drivers always submit their correct age when making a booking on the Auto Europe website because of any restrictions and charges that might apply. Please consult our dedicated blog post for a detailed account of what to do when booking your first car hire.

Can I pick up my car rental in Slovenia in one place and drop it off in another?

Yes. A one-way car hire in Slovenia (both domestic and international) is an option between selected locations for an additional fee. Please note that with certain local car rental companies, a minimum duration may apply such as 2-3 full days, at least. All the relevant info regarding one-way fees (without VAT) can easily be accessed through Auto Europe’s state-of-the-art booking engine simply by clicking the blue and white info icon (i) in the search results (below the car rate). The same details are communicated to customers by e-mail once the reservation has been confirmed.

A one-way fee may be incurred and charged by any of the suppliers of cheap car rental in Slovenia but Auto Europe does not profit in in any way. Nevertheless, it’s important that we inform our clients of all fees in order to help them make the best choice for their trip. Each supplier determines its own fees entirely independently of us, which means that for the same given pick-up and drop-off location, one car rental company may charge less than any of the others, while some might not allow the journey to go ahead at all. This is because every hire car supplier has its own offices and rental locations, thus enabling them to offer customers different options.

If you are planning to cross any borders during your rental period, this is generally allowed by all the suppliers, however the list of restricted countries varies from company to company. In general, Western European and EU countries are acceptable (subject to an additional fee) but any intention to cross the border in Eastern Europe must be noted at the time of booking. To find out about any travel restrictions that might to your one-way car rental in Slovenia, just make a quick search in our booking engine and you’ll find the relevant information (and fee details, if any) by clicking the blue and white info icon (i) in the car details. This same info is also included in the voucher sent out to clients once the booking has been confirmed.

Do I need a credit card to rent a car in Slovenia?

Yes. To book a car hire in Slovenia you will be required to present a valid credit card when you arrive to collect your vehicle. The reason for this is because the local supplier will need to place a hold on the value of the deductible for the duration of the rental period, the amount of which is duly refunded once the vehicle has been returned undamaged in any way. Some people are surprised to find that their cash or debit card cannot be accepted when they arrive to collect their car, so it’s important to remember that only a major credit card (ie Visa, Mastercard, Diners, etc.) with a large enough balance to cover the cost of the rental will suffice (please note that the credit card must be in the main driver’s name). Auto Europe accepts credit cards only as payment methods for the pre-paid reservation rate.

All the necessary information relating to credit cards and payment can easily be found in our search engine results. After selecting your preferred car hire category and supplier, all you need to do is click on the blue and white info icon (i) and the relevant details regarding your choice will pop up. For a quick overview on what to look out for when planning to drive in Slovenia, please consult our information page providing six of the most important things to know about credit cards and deposits before your next trip.

What are the most important driving rules in Slovenia?

Generally speaking, Slovenia has a well-developed road network that is safe for driving, although it’s worth keeping in mind that some local drivers (as everywhere) can be a bit aggressive (ie speeding, tailgating, etc.) so it’s best to always be on your guard. Traffic moves on the right and the country’s road signs/traffic rules are consistent with those used throughout Europe. For an overview, please consult our Slovenia Driving Guide.

Be aware of the speed limit, which is 50 kph (30 mph) in urban areas, on country roads it is 90 kph (55 mph) and 100-130 kph (62-80 mph) on motorways (known locally as the avtocesta). The use of hand-held mobile phones is strictly prohibited in Slovenia and drivers are required by law to keep their headlights on at all times, even during the daytime. The maximum blood-alcohol limit permitted is 0.05, while the limit is zero for drivers under 21 or with less than two years’ experience.

Priority roads marked with a yellow diamond have the right of way, as do vehicles on a roundabout. Any emergency vehicle with blue flashing lights has priority (even if there is no siren), while buses have priority when leaving bus stops. In case of car breakdown or accidents – 112 is the general emergency number, 113 connects you to the police and 1987 connects you to roadside assistance/towing.

Child restraint systems are also mandatory in Slovenia for children under 150cm in height. Please note that kids are free to travel in the front seat in a child restraint system as long as the air-bag is deactivated. A fine of €120 may be given for not complying with the regulations. It’s important to remember that that Between November 15th and March 15th, the use of winter tyres is mandatory by law.

Do I need to pay tolls when driving my car hire in Slovenia?

Yes. When exploring the country with your cheap car rental in Slovenia you’ll need a motorway toll sticker or vignette to pay the tolls. In order to drive on all Slovenian motorways operated and maintained by the toll-road operator, all cars must be equipped with a vignette and since 1 December 2021 it has been possible to buy an e-vignette. Most rental car companies will have this installed when you arrive to collect your vehicle, but if not it costs around EUR 15 for a vignette with a 1-week validity. Vignettes can be purchased for a week, month or a year and are purchased at petrol stations, post offices and near the border. If you are caught without one you could incur a fine up to €800.

What kind of insurance do I need for my car hire in Slovenia?

When you rent a car in Slovenia, you’ll find that all of our car rental rates always include the minimum amount of legally-required coverage comprising Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), either with or without excess depending on the car rental company, and Theft Protection (TP) also with or without excess depending. Because CDW does not cover every part of the vehicle, it’s worth purchasing (for a small extra fee) Auto Europe’s excellent Full Damage & Theft Protection product which covers damage to the car’s wheels, roof, undercarriage, etc. Please note that the cost of this popular policy may vary depending on the location, rental duration, car category and supplier.

By clicking on the blue and white info icon (i) in the search results, it is possible to see the amount of CDW Deductible, Theft Insurance Deductible and Liability Insurance included in the rate. The same information is also included in the T&Cs when making an enquiry or booking. Please note that at the time of pick-up, the car rental company might offer you additional coverage including (but not restricted to) PAI (Personal Accident Insurance), PEC (Personal Effects Coverage), Super CDW, Seguro Relax Insurance, Road Assistance etc. Auto Europe does not refund any locally-purchased insurance charges/fees even if deemed unnecessary once the car has been returned. For more info, please consult our car hire coverage page.

Can I use my UK licence to drive my rental in Slovenia?

No. As a general UK licence holder, you will not need an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive a car hire in Slovenia. However, for the supplier Auto Union, an IDP is mandatory for a holder of a non-European Union (EU) licence, which must be presented in addition to the home licence at the time of picking up the vehicle. Please follow the link for more info about the DVLA changes regarding UK driving licences.

Can I add an additional driver to my rental car in Slovenia?

Yes, additional drivers can quickly and easily be added to your car rental in Slovenia. With some car local suppliers, the fees for additional drivers are already included in the rate, while others charge a daily fee at the time of pick-up, the amount of which is established. In any case, additional drivers need to be officially registered in the rental agreement and will be required to present exactly the same documents as the main driver at the time of pick-up, such as their driving licence (with International Driving Permit, where required) and passport/personal ID. The fees for additional driver are clearly stated on Auto Europe’s website and on the car rental voucher. Please note that Auto Europe has regular Free Additional Driver offers running throughout the year, so if you're planning to go further and visit other places such as Koper, Portoroz and Maribor, then it's well worth sharing the driving with friends and family members in order to relax and enjoy the trip more.
