Car hire in Jersey – Uncover the Channel Islands

    Car hire in Jersey

Jersey is a Crown Dependency located north-west of France. It does not form part of the United Kingdom, although it has strong ties to it. It is 14 miles from Normandy and is the largest island of the Channel Islands. This small island nation consists of Jersey and at least four surrounding smaller islands and rocks. With the power of self-determination, it only replies on the UK for defence. Jersey is ideal for exploring by car, and with a low-cost car rental in Jersey, you’ll be able to do just that. Although public transport is available, we highly recommend a car rental in Jersey. It’s by far the best way to travel from one side of the island to the other without any rush or restrictions.

With more than 65 years of global car hire industry experience, Auto Europe can offer its clients a great rate on their car rental. With regular promotions and deals, clients often benefit from a cheaper hire than going directly to the supplier. Along with standard car hire, we also hire out luxury cards and motorhomes. In addition to providing a transfer service when requested. Contact our reservation team today on +44 123 3225 114 to find out more. These questions have been compiled to provide you with a quick reference guide during your hiring a car in Jersey. Once having read this section, if you still have any further questions then contact our trained team to discuss. Many reservation agents have been trained and have experience in local knowledge.

Do I need a credit card to rent a car in Jersey?

Yes – a valid credit card is needed for when you go to collect your car rental. Suppliers may ask for one or more credit cards depending on the car type and other factors. The credit card must be in the main driver’s name and contain enough funds for a security deposit to be held on it. The amount of deposit is noted on your car hire voucher’s terms and conditions. The deposit will be released back onto the same credit card once the car has been returned and is confirmed to be in the same condition as when it left. Debit cards are not accepted.

When you go to collect your car, make sure you fully inspect the vehicle taking video or photographic evidence of any concerns or damage. Note anything problematic on the pick-up slip. When you return you need to get a member of staff to reinspect the vehicle and sign off everything as okay. If you fail to do this, the supplier may use your deposit to rectify any issue they may have deemed to have been caused during your rental. Suppliers accept all major credit cards, including Mastercard and Visa.

What insurance do I need for my car rental in Jersey?

All basic rates come with the legally required insurance for the country. This basic cover includes Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), Theft Protection (TP) and Liability Insurance. These do not cover everything or every eventuality. Therefore, we highly recommend taking out our Full Damage & Theft Protection Cover during your reservation. For a minimal fee, your hired car will be covered for loss or damage to the vehicles roof, glass, wheels and more.

Local suppliers often offer their own insurances, and these are strictly optional. These can include Personal Effects Insurance (PEI), Roadside Assistance, Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) and others. For the most part if you have already taken out our Full Damage & Theft Protection Cover, these optional covers won’t be needed. Local insurances are paid directly to the supplier on the day, Auto Europe does not profit or recommend them. No refunds will be made even if afterwards it was deemed unnecessary. For further reading, consult our car hire coverage section.

How is the traffic on Jersey?

Traffic on the island isn’t overly problematic outside of the tourist areas and main towns. Some roads are narrow, and care should therefore be taken. This is also valid for roads inside towns. Try to avoid rush hour as some main road junctions can see congestion. Coastline roads in towns and main shopping areas can also see an increase of traffic during certain parts of the day. Read more information in our local road rules and regulations section.

Where can I park my car hire in Jersey?

Parking in Jersey can be tricky – with an above average rate of car ownership per population. Generally parking near tourist attractions is easier, as many have their own car parks. This is also valid for hotels and other points of interest. Towns have limited parking and care should be taken not to pick up a fine. Fines are expensive and easy to get, so we advise fully reading any parking signs before leaving your car. Shopping areas offer paid parking, but often there is a 2-hour limit.

Can I pick up my car hire in Jersey and travel with it to other islands?

No – taking your vehicle of the island is not permitted under any circumstances. If you choose to do this, your insurance cover will not be valid. This means that any issues you encounter off the island, or damage to the car, will be solely your responsibility.

Jersey is a small island, but it does have plenty to see and do for those willing to explore it by car. With lots of history, some historical monuments, museums and other points of interest, Jersey may be small – but it’s a country packed with character, culture and intrigue. The following will introduce you to some of the key activities and places on the island.

Best day trips with my car rental in Jersey

Jersey has loads of beautiful coastline and magical coves to explore and rediscover. Many who visit the island do so mainly for its picturesque shoreline and relaxed atmosphere. With a car hire in Jersey you’ll be able to drive along its entire coastline and stop off wherever you want. Everything done at your own pace and with minimum fuss. Why not consider the following suggestions:

Icho and Seymour Towers: On an islet located round 2-miles off the beautiful coastline of Jersey you’ll come across two unique towers - Icho Tower and the Seymour Tower. Both towers were erected in the 1700s in response to two failed attempts by the French to invade the island. Along with the towers. You can reach these towers only once per day when the tide is down. Once the tide has risen you will be isolated from the mainland. A great place if you’re looking for a calm and solitary retreat. Visitors can even opt to stay a night at the tower.

St.Helier: This small but charming town is the capital of Jersey. The town is the largest on the island but yet very small and walkable. It has plenty of restaurants, quaint coffee bars and pubs to enjoy. By far the best place on the island to shop in, St.Helier also hosts the Jersey Museum & Art Gallery. The art gallery is worth a visit, with multiple art collections, the gallery is the largest on the island. Whilst here, head to Elizabeth Castle which is only reachable by ferry.

The Corbiere Lighthouse: As your drive along the coastline, you’ll come across the Corbiere Lighthouse. A beautiful lighthouse located in southwest Jersey. It is Britain’s most southern lighthouse standing at 62 feet tall. Corbiere means “the place where crows”, although you’ll be hard pushed to find any crows, just seagulls inhabit the island nowadays. Consider visiting the lighthouse and staying until sunset, which are some of the most amazing sunsets you’ll ever see. The radio tower which is located next to it also hosts guests – so why not consider a stay?

Bonne Nuit: Located on the northern coastline is Bonne Nuit, one of Jersey’s beautiful coves, it can be found right at the base of the cliff. A great place for hiking, follow the trails along the cliff side and catch some great views over the channel. There is a coffee house at located if you wish to enjoy its speciality of spicy Thai Jersey style noodles. Whilst here, consider visiting Fort Leicester and Bouley Bay.

From interesting museums to long sandy beaches and historical castles, Jersey may be small, but it has plenty of places to uncover and enjoy. The coastline is stunning and easily drivable by car. Consider adding a nadditional driver and enjoy the journey as a passenger. Many car rental suppliers provide free additional driver, whilst others may charge a small daily fee for the privilege. Check out the following locations to really capture the essence of Jersey.

    • Castle of Mont Orgueil: Dating back around 800 years, Mont Orgueil Castle with its medieval architecture is absolutely charming. The castle overlooks Gorey, a enchanting small village that dates as far back as the castle itself. Explore the many rooms, corridors and secret passageways within the castle. Visitors can also opt to abseil down one of the castle walls – a thrilling experience. Gorey Pier is the ideal place to take some beautiful photos of the castle.

    • Beauport Beach: Although Jersey has loads of wonderful beaches, Beauport Beach is regarded by many as one of the best in Jersey. This secluded beach can only be reached by descending steps along the cliffside. Basic in terms of facilities – there are no coffee houses or restaurants, it does however have a car park. This unspoilt beach is stunning and a great place to unwind and enjoy a day at the beach in relative calm.

    • Le Braye: If you’re looking for a more accessible beach, then head towards Le Braye and enjoy a long sandy coastline with plenty of activities to immerse yourself in. From kite surfing to surfing itself, there are plenty of schools on location. Facilities are better than at Beauport Beach, with a restaurant. At one end of the beach stands a La Rocco Tower, which when reachable is a nice place to explore.

    • Museum of La Hougue Bie: Contained within one of the island’s oldest buildings are ancient artifacts from Jersey’s history. This museum hosts exhibitions that will take its visitors through a historical and cultural journey in time. From the Island’s neolithic era, through the Middle Ages to present day. Learn about the island’s oldest inhabitants and marvel in some of the island’s historical weapons and coins.

    • Historical Jersey War Tunnels: If you’d like to gain a greater understanding of what life was like during the occupation of Jersey by Nazi Germany, then we highly recommend a visit to the historical Jersey War Tunnels. This museum is located within an old war hospital and is one of the most unique places to visit on the island. The occupation lasted between 1940 to 1945 and had a major impact on the island’s inhabitants. The museum is large enough to spend a few hours exploring and has a coffee house too.
