In ancient times, the Romans fortified Nimes as an outpost and left many monuments behind which makes Nimes a great city to explore. This is also the reason why the city has the nickname "French Roma". Most impressive is the Roman amphitheatre in the centre of town. The amphitheatre used to be the stage for fighting gladiators and is now used for concerts and events. It is also one of the best preserved amphitheatres outside of Italy. Just northeast of Nimes you can find Pont du Gard, the highest standing Roman aqueduct in the world and another testament to Roman architecture. The aqueduct is extremely well preserved which makes it one of the most iconic sights around Nimes. With car hire from Nimes it is only a thirty-minute drive to the aqueduct. In the centre of Nimes you will find Les Jardins de la Fontaine. This large park with Roman artefacts, temples and fountains is the perfect place to unwind. Nearby the park is the Esplanade de Charles de Gaulle, a plaza which also has several fountains and massive statues that are worth a visit. Do not miss the Eglise Saint Baudile on your trip; the massive neo-gothic style church is an absolute must-visit and is the largest in the city. Standing tall over the city it seats 3,000 people. Nimes also offers many shops, restaurants and museums which are great to enjoy and explore. Auto Europe provides great rates and service on car hire. Book with us today and save on your car hire!
