Car hire in Almeria – The Best Way to Discover Andalucia

    Car hire in Almeria

Situated on the southern coast of Spain’s Andalucia region, Almeria is popular for its fine weather and dramatic landscapes, not to mention more than 100 miles of golden sandy coastline. Officially the sunniest region in Europe, it was one of the first areas in Spain to develop a wide-ranging tourism-targeted infrastructure, and nowadays the city is a regular first-choice holiday destination for families, couples and individuals right throughout the whole year.

There's much to see in this sun-blessed corner of southern Spain, such as the 10th-century Alcazaba, one of the most impressive citadels of the medieval Islamic al-Andalus territory. Second in size only to the great Alhambra in Granada, this uniquely-styled fortress has many towers, rooms, squares and courtyards to explore, as well as some of the most striking views of the city and surrounding Mediterranean shoreline.

Almeria is easily reached, especially by air, train and bus, but once you get there the city and its environs are best discovered with your own transport. With a car hire in Almeria you'll have all the advantages of visiting its many museums and attractions before heading off into the surrounding countryside to enjoy all the magnificent scenery to be found in the nearby Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park and Tabernas Desert where many of the most famous Spaghetti Westerns were filmed.

With Auto Europe you can plan an exciting road-trip around the Almeria coast and the rest of Andalucia at the lowest rates on the market. Do I need a credit card to rent a car in Almeria?

Yes. The local car hire supplier will ask you to present a valid credit card when you arrive to collect your car rental in Almeria as a security bond in order to ensure that you return the vehicle in exactly the same condition it was in when it left the pick-up point. Please note that the most globally-accepted credit cards to use are Visa, Mastercard, Diners and American Express and they must always be in the main driver's name. Some drivers wrongly assume that they can use a debit or pre-paid card instead of a credit card, which is not the case. Please note that a second credit card might be required (also in the main driver's name) for vehicles in the premium or luxury car category. You can easily find out which cards (and card types) are accepted by making a quick search on the Auto Europe website. Just click on the blue and white info icon (i) and you will find all the details you need regarding the amount of bond payable, etc. Please take a look at our dedicated blog post for more advice on credit cards and car hire deposits before arriving at your destination.

What insurance do I need for my car rental in Almeria?

On the Auto Europe website, all the rates quoted for a cheap car rental in Almeria include liability insurance, theft protection and CDW (Collision Damage Waiver), either with or without excess depending on the supplier. Nevertheless, it's important to take into account the fact that not all parts of the vehicle are covered, which is why many of our customers opt for our Full Damage & Theft Protection coverage product which includes damage to the roof, windows, wheels, undercarriage, etc. for a small additional fee (the amount of which varies according to the location, rental duration, car category and supplier). As with the credit card information, you can access all the details you need relating to CDW, theft protection and liability insurance by clicking on the blue and white info icon (i) in the Auto Europe search results. This information is also clearly stated in the Terms and Conditions when making an enquiry or finalising a booking. Please be aware that some car rental employees often try to sell our customers additional coverage when they arrive at the car hire desk to pick up their low-cost car hire in Almeria, which is completely optional and cannot be refunded by Auto Europe even if it is deemed unnecessary once the vehicle has been safely returned. For more info on this subject, please follow the link to our special Car Hire Coverage section.

How is the traffic in Almeria?

As in many other old towns in Europe, you will find that the streets of Almeria (especially in and around the city centre) are very narrow with little room for maneouvre. There are also many one-way streets which makes navigating the inner city much more challenging, even with a GPS device. However, Almeria is very well connected to the major motorways of the region, so you'll easily be able to make the most of your affordable car rental in Almeria with regular day trips and extended journeys to cities a little further away. You can, for example, get to Granada on the A-92 motorway (Granada is located 103 miles from Almeria and the drive takes little over an hour and a half) and Malaga and Murcia on the A-7 with the minimum of stress. Please take a look at our Spain Driving Guide for more tips and lots of useful information about getting around this wonderful country by car.

Where can I park my car hire in Almeria?

Almeria is a very old place and parking spaces can be quite hard to find in the heart of the historic centre. There are, however, many public and private car parks, where you can conveniently leave your vehicle while exploring the city on foot. There are multiple car parks in the central area of the city, within a very short walking distance of many of the most important historic sites, such as the Alcazaba. Alternatively, you can use the car park at Almeria Train Station - just look for the signposts to Estacion Intermodal. While parking your car rental in Almeria, be mindful of the different parking zones, namely the Blue Zone (which offers paid parking in central locations; Green Zone (mostly reserved for residents at certain times of day) and White Zones (for free parking away from the city centre).

Do I need to pay tolls when driving my car hire in Almeria?

Toll roads in and around Almeria are identified by the prefix AP (Autopista Paeje), while the non-toll roads are marked with just an A (Autopista). Motorway numbers have one or two digits (ie the A-7 which runs along the coast of southern Spain) and regional roads in Andalucia are also prefixed with an A for Andalucia but have three digits (ie the A-375). Drivers can pay with cash, credit card (most international cards are accepted) or through a dedicated app belonging to the Spanish motorways operator Autopistas. You can also pay with an electronic toll device which the supplier can provide you with at the time of picking up your car hire in Almeria. You can easily plan your day-trips and select your route with estimates for time and costs using the Via Michelin website. Consult our blog post for more information about paying tolls when visiting Spain and Portugal

With its volcanic cliffs, soaring cliffs and isolated bays, it has one of the driest climate conditions in the whole of Europe, which makes it the perfect day-trip option at any time of the year, including midwinter. Rodalquilar

Built on gold, the town also has many attractions, including its old mines, an exquisite church, batches of colonial style housing and a wonderful botanic garden where many rare endemic species can be seen.

    Tabernas Desert

A 30-minute drive due north of the city brings you to the Desierto de Tabernas, Europe’s only strip of real desert and a haven for hikers, photographers and lovers of the great outdoors. The scenery is so spectacular here that it was used for as a natural backdrop for many of Sergio Leone’s best films, most notably The Good, The Bad and The Ugly starring Clint Eastwood. Mojacar

With a history stretching back more than a thousand years, Mojacar (which means Holy Mountain) is one of the most charming places to visit in the Almeria area. Visitors can also take advantage of Mojacar Playa, one of the best beaches in souther Spain with its golden sands overlooked by the Sierra Cabrera Mountains close by.

    Sierra Nevada

    Playa del Mónsul

Over 400 metres in length, the beach is divided into two parts by a large rock which had a starring role in the Hollywood epic, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, when Sean Connery frightens a flock of seagulls with an umbrella to bring down a German plane.
