Its centerpiece is the majestic Canal du Midi built by Bezier's most famous son, Monsieur Pierre-Paul Riquet, in the 17th century. The Romans constructed much of Beziers in 36 BC, with numerous vestiges still much in evidence for visitors to enjoy today, particularly in and around the narrow, cobblestone streets and winding alleyways of the Old Town.

Do I need a credit card to rent a car in Beziers?

Yes, a major credit card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, etc.) in the main driver's name will always be required when you rent a car in Beziers and elsewhere in the South of France. The reason for this is that the local vehicle suppliers (ie Avis, Hertz, Sixt, Alamo, Budget, Europcar etc.) need to block an amount on the card to hold as a security bond in case the vehicle is stolen or damaged in any way during the rental period. If eveything is seen to be fine with the vehicle when it is checked, then the amount is promptly released back to the card. Please note that only valid credit cards (not debit or pre-paid cards, for instance) are accepted with enough of a credit limit to cover the value of the security bond. It is also worth knowing that debit cards are not accepted in France. You also need to be aware that due to the high value of luxury and premium cars, the local supplier might ask for two credit cards (also in the name of the main driver) instead of just one.

It's easy to check all the credit card regulations and restrictions when making a quick search through Auto Europe's high-tech booking engine. After selecting your preferred supplier and vehicle category, you just need to click on the blue and white info icon (i) in the car details to access all the respective credit card and payment information. For more tips on paying for your low-cost car hire in Beziers, please check out our credit cards and deposit blog post on our website.

What insurance do I need for my car rental in Beziers?

Auto Europe's rates for cheap car rental in Beziers always include the minimum amount of legally-required fire insurance, liability, collision damage waiver (CDW) and theft protection. Nevertheless, it's important to be aware of the fact that some parts of the vehicle are not covered by the basic rate, which is why many travellers opt for additional coverage such as our Full Damage & Theft Protection package which covers damage to the car's glass, wheels, roof, etc. for a small additional charge, the amount of which depends on the location, rental duration, car category and supplier.

Like the credit card info, it’s very easy to find out what coverage is included in your rental when making a searc in our booking engine. After selecting your desired travel dates etc, you only need to click on the blue and white info icon (i) where you’ll find all the specific coverage specifications such as the mileage allowance, CDW, theft and liability insurance.

Please note that some car rental companies have been known to try to and sell extra coverage to our customers when they arrive to pick up their vehicle. This is completely optional and will quite possibly be surplus to your requirements if you have already purchased our Full Damage & Theft Protection coverage, for instance, and Auto Europe will not be able to refund the cost of any such locally-bought insurance, even if it is found to be unnecessary at the end of your trip. For more car hire coverage info, please take a look at our car hire coverage blog post, as well as our comprehensive our car hire insurance article.

How is the traffic in Beziers?

Driving in Beziers is a breeze compared with many other places in the South of France, such as Nice or Marseille, for instance. Getting around is quick and easy thanks to the fact that the town is small, quite compact and very well connected by some of the region's best motorways and you can reach Beziers within an hour from Montpellier, Carcassonne and Perpignan airports, plus it's also a straight motorway drive down the A75 from the French capital, Paris. When driving around, it's worth noting that Beziers is in an Occitan-speaking region, which means that the local street signs are often in both French and Occitan. Despite its similarity to standard French, Occitan text is usually marked with a small red and gold cross. Note that it is compulsory for drivers to have a breathalyser and safety kit in their vehicles at all times, otherwise you could be hit with a hefty fines. We strongly recommend reading more about general travel advice before driving your car hire in Beziers because the rules for drivers are constantly being updated and new laws often come into force without much warning.

Where can I park my car hire in Beziers?

Most people will tell you that the town centre is best explored on foot, which is why we suggest parking your car rental in Beziers at one of the many car parks dotted around town, subject to an hourly charge. Another good option is to find on-street parking, which is usually quite easy to find away from the centre of town. Some hotels offer free parking to their guests, so make sure you confirm this when making your reservation. Two of the best places to park are in Place Jean Jaurès and Place de la Madeleine (also called Parking Les Halles 1, which are both conveniently located in the heart of the town centre and within easy reach of most of Beziers' top tourist attractions.

Do I need to pay tolls when driving my car hire in Beziers?

Yes. The motorways (or autoroutes) of southern France are a series of motorways that consist of a number of toll roads, which are normally indicated by a blue and white sign of a two lane road and a bridge along with the word ‘Peage’. These motorways are defined by the letter 'A’ and a proceeding number, and Beziers is connected by the A) and the A75 (both toll roads). Note that the A61 which links nearby Narbonne with Toulouse is also a toll road. There are several ways you can pay the tolls, such as by credit card or cash (when the toll booth is manned), although in many arts of the south of France many tolls are now automated and therefore unmanned. Drivers can also pay in advance via ‘Telepeage’ by means of a transponder attached to the vehicle with the letter ‘T’ on it, with payment made via a subscription once you pass through each toll.

    • Pont-Canal: Situated on the southern side of Beziers, the world-renowned Pont-Canal is an impressive aqueduct that bridges the River Orb across the Canal du Midi. Built between 1667 and 1694, this UNESCO World Heritage Site represents one of the most extraordinary achievements of modern times, a masterpiece of engineering with nine locks (Les Neuf Ecluses) that are all still in operation and virtually unchanged since the Pont-Canal's creation.
