Lago Trasimeno
With a surface area of almost 130 square-kilometres, Lago Trasimeno is the fourth-largest lake in Italy. Deruta
About 20 kilometres south of Perugia, Deruta is a major centre for high-quality Umbrian ceramics, with several shops selling this brightly painted majolica ware in and around the town centre. To see some fine old pieces, the best place to visit is the Museo delle Maioliche on the first floor of the Palazzo Communale.
Assisi
Nestling on the western flank of Monte Subasio, the charming town of Assisi is the birthplace of some of Italy's most important figures, including St Clare, the Latin poet Propertius (born around 50–45 BC) and St Francis who founded the Franciscan religious order there in 1208. Completed in 1253, the Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi is the town's star attraction and houses the tomb of its most famous son who is buried in the crypt. Other Assisi landmarks include the Roman amphitheatre built in the 1st century AD and the abbey of St Benedict which was founded in the 10th century on Monte Subasio.
Mount Sibillini National Park
Featuring some of the highest summits in central Italy - most notably Mount Sibillini itself at 2,173 metres (7,129 feet) - Monti Sibillini National Park (Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini) lies a 90-minute drive south-east of Perugia. Formed approximately 200 million years ago during the Mesozoic Era, the area's rugged landscape means that many of its settlements are small hilltop towns and villages offering a wealth of historic and cultural interest for visitors. Some fifty species of mammal are present in the park, amongst them chamois and Apennine wolves and deer.
